Honors English 8
April 27-May 1, 2015
Monday:
Daily Warm Up
Students will read a play called The Great Science Fair Tragedy.
o Students will discuss and evaluate the various themes in the play.
Reading Log #14 is due TODAY, Monday, April 27.
Reading Log #15 is due May 21st!
Learning Targets:
o I can engage in a range of collaborative discussions.
o I can express my own ideas clearly.
o I can cite evidence from a text.
o I can determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development
over the course of a story.
o I can understand the effect of rhyme and alliteration in poems.
Tuesday:
Daily Warm Up
Students read an informational text about the effect technology and the
Internet has on human brains.
Students will participate in an activity in which they read two sides to a
Scholastic debate titled: Is Google Making Us Stupid?
Students will participate in a 4-Corner Debate, reflecting on the questions
posed in both articles.
Reading Log #15 is due May 21st!

o I can cite evidence from a text.
o I can determine the central ideas in a text, find its supporting details,
and discuss their relationship.
o I can determine how a text makes connections between ideas, people,

Wednesday:
Daily Warm Up
Students will review their understandings of Found Poems and create a Found
Poem using a provided passage in honor of National Poetry Month.
Students will view a video, reflecting and evaluating on the speakers
message.

Students will attend the Book Fair at the end of the period.
Reading Log #15 is due May 21st!
Learning Targets:
o I can engage in a range of collaborative discussions.
o I can express my own ideas clearly.
o I can determine a speakers argument and specific claims.
o I can acknowledge new information given by others and be able to
develop and justify my own view.

Thursday:
1. Warm up: What does it mean to be an outsider? What kinds of situations
in life can make you feel like an outsider? Have you ever felt like an
outsider? When? Why? Do teens often feel like outsiders? Explain. Explain
your answer in 3-4 sentences.
2. Students will be introduced to the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
Kahoot.it quiz formative assessment
Power point and youtube video introduction
Students will receive their logs/packets for the novel (Packets due May
21st.)
Assign books
3. Students will be introduced to the Decades Research Project and be
assigned to groups. Project due May 21st. If time permits groups can meet to
divide information to research.
4. If time permits, students will read chapter 1 and answer questions in their
packet.
Students will complete a character chart about the characters in the
novel.
5. Exit Slip: The most important thing you learned today is I still have
questions about

Decades Research Project.
o I can research several sources of information to answer specific
questions.
o I can create my own questions based on investigation, and then
research the answers.

the correct format to avoid plagiarism.
o I can give a presentation that includes multimedia and visual displays in
presentations that adds interest.
o I can adapt a speech to a variety of tasks.
Friday
Daily Warm Up
Students will be introduced to the Senior Packets.
Students will say farewell and good luck to Miss Tan!
Reading Log #15 is due May 21st!
Learning Targets:
o I can engage in a range of collaborative discussions.
o I can express my own ideas clearly.
o I can cite evidence from a text.
o I can create an illustration, specifically drawing on instances in the text.
o I can understand allusions made to historical references, mythologies,
and religious works within modern fiction.
Homework:
Read your independent reading novel and log. Students must read 5 times per
week for 20 minutes each time. Reading log #15 is due May 21st!
The Outsiders Packet is due May 21st!
Decades Research Presentations are May 21st!
