OBSERVATION TASK 6:
MANAGING BEHAVIOUR AND INCREASING
MOTIVATION WITH REWARDS AND AWARDS .
Focus:
To recognise various techniques teachers use for motivating students
and rewarding good behaviour.

Objective :
The objective of this task is for student teachers to begin to
understand the different strategies teachers use to motivate
students and encourage good behaviour.

Task :
Teachers use various reward systems to reward individual
behavior or the whole group behaviour. This may done several
times through out the day or at the end of the day/week/ etc. in
the classroom. Identify the different rewards (good behavior
recognition) systems your teacher and specialist teachers use.

Awards
Awards are a bit different from rewards. Awards are for things like
student of the week, best reader, superstar speller, etc. The
awards can be in the form of a certificate or listed somewhere in the
classroom. They are usually for an accomplishment that a student has
achieved or for doing something well. They are usually many different
awards so that each child has a chance to earn one. In the case of

They don't have award system because the

students are too young , they are 2-3 years old .

Observation
Rewards and awards are used by teachers to motivate students to do well
and to encourage good behavior.
1. REWARDS:
This week, please observe a child with good consistently good behavior
and one with not so good behavior. Watch for their reactions when
either they are rewarded or not rewarded. Think about whether the
reward system is effective for encouraging good behavior. Write a
paragraph about your observations.
2. AWARDS
Talk to two students who have recently received awards. Find out
what they were for and ask the students how they felt when they got
the awards.

They dont have awards system

because the students still too young .

Rewards can be by many ways like : positive praise or gift or even stars sticker
can make the kids happy and encourage them to do more .
In this TP I observed two students , one of them with good consistently good
behavior and one with not so good behavior . What I recognised are that both of
them try to have the teacher attention , and praised. Also both of them felt jealous
when someone praised , they want the attention just for themselves . However
the one with good behaviour try all the day to be the best one at the class but the
one with bad behavior he dont care , he just want to praise when someone
praise .For example when I told the kids if you eat your food I will stuck your
picture on the happy face , the one with good behaviour he'd did what I asked
them to do ,but the one with not so good behaviour he didnt eat his food but he
want his picture to be on the happy face . Thats mean he care , he want to be a
good student but he also want to do what he want . Thats why miss Zainab asked
hem to help her all the day ,so she can distracted hem by her orders, and
controlled his behaviour to help hem reveals and use the good side of their
personalty more .
In the end I think reward system is the best way to help the young student do
more and more , and encourage them to show good behavior , because they just
kids they are not thinking that they need to study to have in the end big house or
nice car , they don't have any goals yet expect to be the teacher favourite
student ,and to have star sticker on their books.

Reflection
Giving rewards to encourage good behavior is very controversial. That means
that there are two sides to this behavior management strategy.
Some teachers think using rewards is a bad thing because they feel that the
child only behaves to get a prize. So when there is no prize(or reward), they
wont behave. This is called EXTRINSIC motivation. The motivation comes from
outside the preson.
Other teachers think that a child should do well and behave because it is the
right thing. That good behavior is something that we should do naturally and
should not be rewarded for it. This is called INTRINSIC motivation. The
motivation comes from inside the person.

Extrinsic
Some parents pay their
children money for good
grades ($50 for each A,
$40 for a B, etc.). The
child strives to get an A
only for the money he will
receive. If he did not
receive money, he would
not get an A.

Intrinsic
The child gets good grades
because he is motivated
from inside himself to do
well.
The good grade is reward
enough.

Example:
In your reflection, discuss:
How are you motivated? Extrinsically or intrinsically? Give an example.
Is your teachers individual reward system effective (from what you
noticed?)
Is your teachers group reward system effective?
Your personal idea about using rewards in the classroom
What kinds of rewards do you think work best?
What kinds of rewards are not good?
What can the teacher do to make sure that all children get rewarded from
time to time?
What kinds of awards did you receive as a student?
What is your opinion about awarding children for accomplishments?

When I was young my teachers and my parent used to encourage me by

the extrinsically way ,however when I grew up they told that I should work
hard to have a perfect future . For example they helped me in the begging
by praise me , giving me certificates and a lot of gifts ,then when they felt
that I am in the age that I can have my decision to study or not ,they stopped
the extrinsically way ,because I should study without anyone award or
reward .My MST use reward system to encourage her student , and that was
very effective for them . When she rewards individual , the one who
rewarded felt happy and proud ,and the other try to do the same to reward
too. For example , when miss Zainab rewarded Alia ,because she was
participating in the class , the other students tried to participate to have the
same praise from their teacher . Also when she rewarded all of the students
because they knew how to write number 2 , they felt happy ,and they were
more confidante and comfortable to stay all the day with teacher who told
that they are outstanding in every thing .
My personal idea about rewards are its an effective way to encourage the
students to learn ,because people always like to show the others that they
achieved something in their life , also that gives the students power to
work harder . In my opinion the best reward is to have teachers who care
about you, who understand you and feel happy when you do something
good , also when the teacher praise her student in front of the others , that
makes the student shining and feeling happy all the day . However there are
un effective rewards , like when the teacher praise you without looking to
your face or smile , that make the students think is that good thing or
not ?? .Absolutely if there is no emotion and facial expression the students
will never understand that they did something good . So the teacher should
reward her students with big smile , and as much she smiling and feeling
happy as mush the students will understand that they did some thing good or
very good . In addition teacher should make sure that all the students get
rewarded from time to time , like doing Individual and group activities ,
because its very important for the student to reward , they will feel that
they are important in the class if their teacher reward and award them . I
remember my first award ,it was in grade one , my teacher award me,
because I was the best painter in my class , in that day I felt that I am the
quean of the world ,that certificate give me a huge confident and made me
happy . My opinion in awarding children are that its nice to see them smile
because they got award from their teacher , its really nice and important to
award the children for their accomplishments ,so they can know that
someone care about them .
