Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, kf(x), f(kx), and f(x + k) for specific values of k (both
positive and negative); find the value of k given the graphs. Experiment with cases and illustrate an explanation of the
effects on the graph using technology. Include recognizing even and odd functions from their graphs and algebraic
expressions for them.
F-BF 3.
Big Ideas:
Construct new functions from existing functions
Unit Goals and Objectives:
The goal of this unit is to provide students with information about the transformations of various functions.
Students will observe and produce translations, reflections, dilations, and ultimately transformations of parent graphs for linear,
absolute value, and quadratic functions. They will identify their basic curves, and using aid from a variety of technology from
appropriate use of online interactives to graphing calculators, students will gain visual comprehension of the computations they
perform by hand with pencil and paper.
Unit Summary:
During this unit, students will learn about parent functions, and focus on their graphs and transformations. They will observe
how a functions graph is affected when there are changes to the x and y variables of the function. They will also determine
effects on the functions domain, range, and end behavior.
By the end of the unit, students will be able to build functions and sketch their graphs with pencil and paper, and use of
technology like graphing calculator, and they will describe their transformations verbally and through writing.

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:
Portray functions by
plotting points and
drawing graph on x-y
coordinate plane
Acceptable Evidence:
Given a set of
functions, students
will find 3-5 points
that lie on that
functions graph, and
on x-y coordinates will
plot the points.
This will be turned in
at the end of the class
period.
