Name: Malka Field

Lesson Title:

The iPad

Grade Level:

6th

Subject:

Science
Description of Learning Goals, Standards, Objectives, and Assessments

GPSs:

S6E1 Students will explore current scientific

views of the universe and how those views
evolved.
c. Compare and contrast the planets in terms of
size relative to the earth
surface and atmospheric features relative
distance from the sun
ability to support life.

National Technology Standards:

Creativity and innovation

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct
knowledge, and develop innovative products and
processes using technology.
1. Apply existing knowledge to generate new
ideas, products, or processes
2. Create original works as a means of personal
or group expression
3. Use models and simulations to explore
complex systems and issues
4. Identify trends and forecast possibilities

Cultural Context and Learner Characteristics:

Diversity:

The students in my class consist of primarily gifted

students. These students are in my class because
they have extraordinary talents in the science area.
Some of the students are foreign and do not speak
English as their first language.

Learning Styles:

Since they are 6th grade students, many still need

some help before fully understanding assignments

given. This required auditory, kinesthetic, and visual
aids to help them learn.

Background Knowledge:

The students are just beginning their sixth grade

studies and this is one of the first lessons taught this
year. However, most are familiar with electronic
devices because it is a wealthier school.

Long-Term Learning Goal or Outcome:

By the end of the unit, I hope that my students will

understand how to use an iPad for the benefit of
education, which apps will help them learn, and the
planet information required as designated in the
Georgia performance standards.

Observable Objectives or Outcomes:

Objective: Use the app Planets to explore the

location of each planet. This 3D guide will give
students an almost lifelike experience as they discover
the solar system.
Objective: Use the Planets App to learn new
information about each of the planets. This app allows
students to click on each planet to discover more
about it.

Assessment Plan:

Formative Assessment:
Students will submit a poster at the end of the
activities on the iPad to show what they have learned.
Description of Activities with Technology and Materials

Activity Design:

Day 1:

Class starter and lesson connection:

Class opening: Have you ever wondered about what

the planets in the sky look like up close? How old they
are? Their sizes and shapes?
I will allow my students to answer these questions in a
discussion format. They will have a chance to offer
what they know on the subject.

Question(s) for the day or statement of

objectives:
Teacher and student activities:

We are going to learn about the planets size, location,

ability to support life, and distance from the sun.
Access Prior Knowledge:
The teacher will review how to use an iPad and which

buttons to press to access the correct apps.

Teacher Activity:
Give direct instruction on how to use the first app,
Planets
How to use the app Planets
Turn the iPad on by pressing the home
button
Navigate to the app named Planets
Go to the home page of Planets
Write down any information you learn
through the app
Gain Attention;
Teacher: So, have you ever wondered if life can exist
on other planets? Have you ever heard of any
conspiracies that aliens exist in outer space? What are
they?
Allow students to reply and continue to probe their
answers.
Homework: Students will have to fill in a worksheet
and use the Planets app to answer the questions.
Day 2
Collect homework for formative feedback.
Class Opening: Now that we have discussed the
planets in depth, what are your thoughts on them?
Have any of your preconceptions changed?
Teacher Activity: Short presentation using Powerpoint
to illustrate what students learned in the previous day.
Ask: What more do you think there is to learn other
than the shapes and sizes from yesterday?
Teacher activity: How to use the Planets App
Turn the iPad on by pressing the home
button
Navigate to the app named Planets
Go to the home page of Planets
Click on each planet to discover its history
and other important facts
Write down any information you learn
through the app
Homework: Students will have a second worksheet to
fill out on their findings.

Day 3
Collect homework to see what students have learned.
Return previous days homework.
Review information from the past two days. Prepare
students for exam tomorrow.
Give students time to ask questions in class.
Give students time to explore both apps.
Day 4:
Students will be assessed on what they have learned
through a written multiple choice exam.
Technology Connection:
Students will use the iPad for each of their lessons on
the planets.
Materials and Resources:
iPad, paper, pencils, two handouts, exam, computer,
powerpoint software, projector
Reflection on Lesson Deign
Design:

As a teacher, I built on their prior knowledge of planets

and their understanding of how to use an iPad. I used
technology to engage their focus on the lesson. I used
whole class instruction to review material. I used class
discussions to have students explain their thoughts. I
provided the necessary tools for them to learn the
material.

Cultural Relevance:

As an educator I made sure that the app had other

language options since many of the students did not
speak English for their first language. As an educator,
I was able to employ culturally

Actions :

If I were to redo this lesson, I would take additional

time to discuss the information with my students
through lectures and discussions. I would have

provided additional articles and readings for them to

complete.
