Artifact 2 Hawaiian Culture Unit

Standard #7: Planning for Instruction. The teacher plans instruction that supports
every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content
areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of
learners and the community context.
I am using this unit plan as evidence for standard #7, planning for instruction.
While student teaching in a fourth grade classroom I taught a Hawaiian Culture unit in
social studies. Students worked in small groups on a specific topic within Hawaiian
culture. Some of these topics were food, jobs, clothing, and government. Each group
researched ancient Hawaii times and the present Hawaii times today. Some of the
resources that the students used were books from the library on ancient Hawaii, prior
knowledge of Hawaii today, and the Internet. Students were able to use prior knowledge
as well from past social studies lessons. Students had learned about the way that the
islands were formed, native and invasive species to Hawaii, and the first peoples to come
to Hawaii.
Students presented their research in the form of a powerpoint and with props if
time permitted. Each group worked together to create their powerpoint slides. Each
person in the group had to create 1-2 slides with a total of approximately 6 slides. All
groups had to present their powerpoint to the class and take notes while they were
presenting in order to prepare their study guide for their test. Lastly, students had a
jeopardy review based on the groups powerpoints and then the test for the unit. The test
consisted of fill in the blanks with a word bank and a constructive response.
Therefore, I believe that I have met standard #7, planning for instruction. I was
able to create this unit plan to fit the needs of all learners. Students were able to do
research in many different ways and obtain knowledge in many different ways, including

prior knowledge. Students were also graded as a group and individually. All students
were able to work together as a community to complete their research and projects.
