Process
Four-stage process consisting of both oral and written taskssee below for
more details on each stage
Administration
NOTE: The Written Assignment process will be undertaken for each text in Part 1Works in Translation. In
our case, these are Sahar Khalifehs Wild Thorns and Wislawa Szymborskas Selected Poetry. HL students
will, in addition, undertake the same process for Marjane Satrapis Persepolis. A final essay must be
based on a singular text (or poet) that is chosen by the student to be developed from these drafting
processes undertaken through April-June of this yearthe final submission of the essay will be October
16th, 2015.
At least one oral must be completed in relation to each work studied in part 1.
The suggested minimum time for discussion of each work is 30 minutes.
NOTE: There will be five interactive orals in total; Standard Level and Higher Level students will undertake
their Interactive Orals in discrete groups. Students are meant to be making substantive contributions,
which is difficult, if not impossible, with a grouping of 24 students. Because our HL grouping is large, the
time allotted for the three HL IOs will be 70-75 minutes. The SL IOs will be 45-50 minutes.
reflective statement on the same work as the students final assignment is submitted for assessment.
The reflective statement must be based on the following question.
How was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed
through the interactive oral?
300400 words. If the limit is exceeded, assessment will be based on the first
400 words.
Submission
The reflective statement about the work used in the students final
assignment (essay) is submitted together with the assignment.
Assessment
Administration
NOTE: The reflective statement will be assessed independently, before the supervised writing takes place.
The intention is that the prompts that you will be given during the supervised writing will be based on the
context of your discussions during the interactive oral, and which will be demonstrated in your reflective
statements. The necessary reflective statement will be used again once the student has finalized which
text and supervised writing she/he chooses to develop for the final submission in October 2015.

Formal Requirements for the Supervised Writings
Length
There is no specified length. The constraint will be the time allotted for the
taskfor SL students: 45 minutes; HL students: 55 minutes.
Submission
Assessment
Administration
The task is open book and students should have access to the literary works
being used for the writing. Annotations are acceptable, but students should
not have access to secondary materialthis includes notebooks and laptops
All pieces of supervised writing must be kept on file at the school.
NOTE: Feedback for each supervised writing task will be qualitative, based upon the assessment
language used in the Written Assignment rubric, criteria B, C, D, and E. It is possible that some (or all) of
the content of your supervised writing may be heavily edited or redacted in your final essay preparation.
A grade, for what its worth at this stage, will necessarily have to be inferred on the students part.
Supervised Writing will be scheduled as follows:
After receiving feedback on the first draft, the student must complete the written assignment
without further assistanceminimal class time will be provided after August 2015.
Submission
The final essay is submitted for assessment along with the relevant reflective
statement. The essay should be a well-presented, formal piece of work.
Assessment
Administration
The relevant reflective statement must be submitted with the final essay.
NOTE: Qualitatively assessed Supervised Writing will be returned to students in August-September 2015, at
the beginning of the school year. From this, students may choose to develop a final Written Assignment,
in consultation with the teacher. The expectation is that a final Written Assignment will be submitted by
October 16th, 2015. The assignment must be the independent work of the student, which will be verified
with uploading the finished essay on Turnitin.com. Statements on the coversheet declaring that the
assignment is the independent work of the student must be signed by the student and by the supervising
teacher.
