POLLUTION

AFFECTS OF POLLUTION
By: Emmett Shannon

Negative Affects
Pollution its affecting us all and we know that, but do we know
how big the affects are? Well heres some facts.
1 60% of heart failure and strokes are linked to poor air quality.
2 In 1984 45 tons of methyl isocyanate escaped from an
insecticide plant in Bhopal thousands who lived nearby causing
mass panic during this tens of thousands tried to flee Bhopal.
3 Originally a dumping ground for 22,ooo tons of chemical waste
in the 1940s and 50s love canal was turning into a residential
area, but in 1978 leakage was discovered in basements. Later
investigations showed high rates of genetic damage to
residents.
These are just some of the affects of pollution and compared to
other cases they are minor incidents, but the affects when
pollution is stoped are numerous to. Here are some of them.
.

Negative Affects

Positive Affects
1 The UN was cleaning up pollution
encouraged places like Syria Isriel Turkey
and Greece to clean up beaches.
2 The long range trans boundary air
pollution treaty is extended to 8 protocals
that identify specific measures to be
taken by parties to cut their emmision of
air pollutants

Positive affects

Top 5 Most Polluted Places

5 Lake Karachay, Russia 4

Cheronobyl, Ukraine

Used for years as a

nuclear dumping site
by the Soviet Union it
is said just 1 hour
there would be lethal.

Site of the worst

nuclear accident in
history, Chernobyl
is now for the most
part uninhabited
due to radiation
and fallout.

3 Linfen, China 2 North Pacific

Gyre

It has been said that if you hang your laundry

here it will turn black before it can dry.
Although there has been small improvements
made its far from clean

This dump is located in the north pacific

because rotating currents trap the garbage
here

1 Ahvez, Iran

Ahvez is now the most polluted city on

earth with no help from dust storms
which are constantly making matters
worse.

My question

How might the UN and

Canada stop pollution in
significant ways???

Answer

Canada and the UNs focus on pollution is

to increase air quality on the local national
and regional level they are doing this by
starting a project called the energy coal
combustion and atmospheric pollution
the UNEP and some other organizations
have teamed up to start this and are
reducing emission of SO2, NOx ,TSP and
green house gases. It also gets other
countries involved in the field of trans,
boundry pollution reduction.

What we can do

Now that is what Canada and the UN are

doing, but what can we do? We can do
lots of things and it isnt hard. Its as
simple as picking up a tin can on the road
or walking instead of taking the car. If we
all do this the world can be a better
place.
