1. January 28, 2015 PLC for 30 minutes during school
a. Discussed IEPS, IRSN, and class trips
b. 5th grade cluster meeting
c. Supposed to meet every Wednesday to discuss special needs students that
need to be put in the system before they go to middle school.
d. I learned that collaboration with your fellow teachers is critical to make
sure that you are all addressing the needs of the students. Its crucial to
make sure that everyone either agrees that a student needs to be placed in
IRSN. Collaborating for class trips is also vital because there are so many
trips and activities that go on throughout the year that planning a class trip
is tough sometimes.
2. January 28, 2015- Child Assault Prevention for 90 minutes at Rider University
a. Discussed signs and symptoms of child abuse
b. Watched a video about Jenna, who was sexually assaulted
c. I learned that you cant lose a childs trust. If they are a victim of sexual
abuse, they already feel like trust has been lost with one adult, and you
dont want them to not trust you to tell you things in the future. If a
student asks you to promise not to tell anyone, and you do tell someone,
trust has been broken. Therefore, if a student comes to you in confidence,
reassure them that you want to do whats best as possible for them and that
if you feel someone needs to know you will share what the student has
told you. Also, I learned to look for more symptoms than just the typical
ones, such as, bad grades, not eating, becoming shy etc. There are new
signs now that would make teachers question if anything is even wrong
with the student. Its important to always be perceptive and make sure
your students are safe.

a. Discussed the difference between peer coaching and mentoring.

b. Talked about instructional coaching and how that differs from the other
two mentioned above.
c. Talked about student achievement goal and how to be conscious of your
actions.
d. Learned the importance of finding a peer coach when I get a job and how
influential a mentor really is to you.
e. I learned that you need to have a mentor when you first get a job after
graduation. A mentor is someone who can show you the ropes and help
you out when youre having a tough day. They can guide you with some
suggestions to do in the classroom, but mainly theyre not there to grade
you on how youre doing, but be a support system for you.
4. February 24, 2015- PLC, 60 minutes, Bear Tavern Elementary
a. Discussed PARCC information and how we need to have enough
technology for the upcoming weeks.
b. Also discussed students that need to be documented before they go to
middle school.
c. Learned that you really need to communicate with your other staff
members often to make sure that everyone is on the same page. Its
important to discuss with your clusters all the kids that you have, those
that struggle and those that strive, so that you can follow the appropriate
action plans in order to achieve success.
5. February 25, 2015- PLC, 30 minutes, Bear Tavern Elementary
a. Went over tutorial for PARCC. Looked at screen that teachers will look at
during the PARCC.
b. I learned that most teachers are confused by the setup and think there will
be a lot of confusion come the test. Teachers have a lot of questions about
the test because they receive so little information on it. Overall, its good

for teachers to stick together with these kinds of tests and to support each
other when they need it.
6. March 16, 2015- Professional Development, 30 min, Bear Tavern Elementary
a. Whole school meeting about rumor control and selection process of the
new principal.
b. Discussed some new attributes for the next school year and then worked
on SGOs for the year.
c. I learned that teachers are sometimes left in the dark about big decisions
and then start to create what they think will happen. Those concerns
spread like wildfire across the school and rumors start. Its important to
talk about these rumors and smush them so that they dont get repeated
again. Also, its important not to post things on social media about other
teachers, students, or principals because someone who you dont want to
see it could and then you can get in a lot of trouble and possibly lose your
job.
7. April 15, 2015- Engaging 3-8th Grade Students in the Classroom, 90 min, Rider
University
a. Professional Development workshop that discussed different ways to
engage students in unique ways.
b. One cool technique was to give students three pipe cleaners and have them
create something that would describe them using the three pip cleaners.
Its a great icebreaker and it allows for students to use their creative side.
c. I learned that its important to make sure students are actively engaged in
your classroom. Students have a hard time retaining information if they
arent excited or intrigued about the lesson.
