Use of Formative
Assessment

Objective 1: After
listening to a read
aloud, students will be
able to comprehend
the literary text fully.

Pre- I will ask students

if they have ever read
the story, Corduroy
before. If they have I
will ask them to raise
their hands. If not, I will
ask them what they
think is going to
happen in this story by
looking at the cover
page. I will point to the
bear on the cover and
ask the class if they
think this is Corduroy. I
will also ask why do
you think the bear is
pointing to the white
button.
During- I will ask
questions during the
read aloud based on

If students are not

answering the
questions logically
during the read
loud, I will give the
students small
hints to encourage
them to remain on
task. I will flip back
to pages if need be
to make sure that
students are
grasping the
correct concept of
the story and
sequence of
events.
The after
assessment will
prove that students

the text, Corduroy.

Students will be asked
throughout the story
what exactly is
happening and what
they would do if they
were Corduroy. I will
use a checklist of
students who are
answering the
questions as they go,
so I know who has
been focused and on
track.
After- After the read
aloud, students will
discuss as a group the
sequence of events
that occurred
throughout the story.
After the read aloud
and discussion is
complete, students will
be given a worksheet
that includes a blank
tracing of a bear with
writing lines that state,
Corduroy the Bear,
and have an additional
line for the students to
add on to the
sentence. Students will
use descriptive words
to describe their bear
and then color the bear
when they have
complete 1-2
sentences using their
descriptive words.

attention to the
main character,
Corduroy, and how
his personality is
throughout the
sequence of
events. If students
are successful, I
will plan to
incorporate
another read aloud
in my future lesson
plans that have a
more complex post
assessment. If
students struggle, I
will plan to do a
similar activity with
them at a later
date and plan to be
more thorough.

Accommodations:
For my students who finish early, I will ask them to flip their paper over and draw a
picture on the back or add on to their sentences the best way they can. For low-level and
resource students, I will make it a point throughout my lesson to call on them to answer
a small question in order to ensure that they are paying attention and comprehending
the information that is being read. I will provide the worksheet on the Smartboard in a
large font in order for my visual learners to be able to see clearly and efficiently when
Im describing the post assessment. For my auditory learners, I will use the class
microphone to ensure they can hear my soft voice along with repeating through the
microphone what other students are responding to the questions. If I notice that my

students are becoming bored or restless with the lesson especially the pre-assessment, I
will ask them to stand up and stretch and complete a YouTube moving activity before
moving on tot heir writing assignment.
Materials:
o Corduroy Book by Don Freeman
o Corduroy worksheet
o Pencils
o Crayons
o Erasers
o Smartboard
o Scissors
o Glue
Procedures:
1. Students will be called by numbers to move from their tables to their color square
on the rug.
2. After the students will remain quiet, I will introduce the book, Corduroy by Don
Freeman and the Illustrator.
3. Ask: What do you think this book is going to be about?
4. Ask: Using some descriptive words, what do you see on the front cover?
5. Listen to some responses from the students.
6. Read the book and stop to ask verbal questions along the way while listening to
verbal responses in return.
7. Discuss the book after the read aloud is complete by discussion the events that
occurred in order.
8. Ask: what are some descriptive words that we can use to describe the main
character?
9. I will then introduce the Corduroy worksheet.
10.
I will begin by explaining that the students will trace with a pencil over
Corduroy the Bear.
11.
I will then explain that they will finish making a sentence by using descriptive
words to describe the main character, Corduroy. Students will be encouraged to
create 2 sentences describing the main character.
12.
I will then explain that when they are finished with their 1-2 sentences, that
they will color their bear using crayons.
13.
Students will then cut out their bear and sentences and glue them to red
construction paper.
14.
If they finish early, I will ask them to turn their paper over and write
additional sentences on the back.
Activity Analysis:
Read Aloud: Students will be able to discuss the sequencing of the read aloud, Corduroy
with 100% accuracy. Students will be able to differentiate the sequences throughout the
story easily. A class discussion will refresh the students memory of what happens in the
story and will prepare them for a writing worksheet.
Worksheet: Students will be given a worksheet with a blank bear that will give them the
opportunity to create and illustrate their own Corduroy using their own individual
personality. Students will use descriptive words to describe the character, Corduroy in
the read loud.
