COMM 1010: A GUIDE FOR OUTLINING YOUR SPEECH
Audience and Occasion Analysis:
SPECIFIC GOAL: My audience will learn to make basic bets on a craps
table and not feel intimidated.
SPEAKER ETHOS: I have been a craps dealer for 4 years and am
currently managing a casino party company.
PATTERN OF ORGANIZATION: Ive chosen the chronological pattern of
organization because we will talk about the basics of the game and
then work through the sequence of the game.
AUDIENCE ANALYSIS:People often travel outside of Utah to visit
Casinos. Craps can be a fun interactive game and has the best odds in
the casino but it can be intimidating to learn. I will help my audience
understand the basics of the can and how to place simple bets on the
table.
OCCASION ANALYSIS:This is an appropriate topic for SLCC students.
The room is equipped with a projector which will assist in my speech.
Speech Outline:
I. INTRODUCTION:
A. Hook: Often times in a casino, the people at the craps table seem to
be having the best time. The problem is that the table is big, and looks
complicated. Yet, with a few simple tips, you can learn to understand
the game and even place some simple bets.
B. I have been a craps dealer for a local casino party company for the
last 4 years and am currently helping to manage the company.
C. Thesis: Craps looks like a complicated game but can be simplified.

D. Preview: I will explain three concepts to help you understand and

feel confident enough to place some bets.
First, what is the game of craps?
Second, understanding the basics of a craps game.
Third, a few additional common bets and those to avoid.
II. BODY:
A. What is the game of craps?
1. Look and features of a craps table.
a. Largest table in the casino. Colin Jones explains it as a large
table with seemingly endless rules and betting combinations.
b. Looks complicated because the board has so much going on.
2. The most interactive game in the casino.
a. Everyone at the table is betting on a single roll of the dice.
b. People at the table are most often betting together.
c. Money can be won on each throw of the dice making it quick
paced.
2. Has high odds of winning compared to other games.
a. Slots are the most commonly played and are the worst odds.
10% or more!
Jay Bean, a Caesar's floor manager, Many people don't realize
that table games have much better odds than slots. They are
intimidated by thoughts of card sharks taking their money...so
they stick to the safe games: the slots.
b. Craps and Black Jack are both about 50/50, with some bets on
the craps table increasing those odds.
(Transition) Now that you understand how much fun and interactive it can
be, lets move on to the basics of the game.
B. Understanding the basics of a craps game.
1. Come out roll.

a. What is a come out roll?

b. 7 & 11 Wins; 2, 3, &12 Loses
c. Any other number establishes a point.
2. Now that a point has been established...
a. The goal is to roll the point number again, before a 7 is rolled.
b. The odds bet.
c. If a 7 is rolled.
(Transition) Because you may roll several times without rolling the point or
a 7, additional bets can be placed to make each roll of the dice more
interesting.
C. Some common bets and some to avoid.
1. Line bets
a. what is a line bet?
b. How does it pay?
c. When does it lose?
2. Suckers bets
a. What are they?
b. Why they are enticing?
c. Why they are a bad.
2. Set limits and learn etiquette.
a. Time limit
b. Set money limit
c. Craps Etiquette
III. CONCLUSION: Now that you understand the basics of a craps game and
how to make simple bets, you will be able to participate without feeling
intimidated. Alex Pierce, a frequent craps player stated, Craps can be a fun
and rewarding game but you must first remember that playing craps (or any
casino game for that matter), is not about winning. Fun should be a major
part of your game. Make sure you have fun, winning should come as a
reward.
