have learned in lab such as vital signs assessment,
basic hygiene, basic assessment, safe use of mobility
aides, feeding safety and aspiration precautions,
medical asepsis and resident safety.
Unprepared students will be asked to leave for the
day and will result in an unsatisfactory grade for the
day
Can result in clinical failure

PREPARATION FOR CLINICAL

Getting assignments- Clinical Instructors will send
basic info via coursemail:
Example #1 : if your instructor tells you that you will care for an
82-year-oldfemale who is 4 days post-op hip surgery, you need
to review care of the resident how has had that type of
procedure (This is why you have your Lewis Med/Surg text!)
Example #2 : if your instructor tells you that you will be caring for a
72-year-old male who had a stroke and has a gastrostomy tube
which is used for feeding, you will need to know about stroke care and
tube feeding care.

SAFE PRACTICE
Students deemed UNSAFE will be removed from
clinical and a clinical failure will be recorded.
Keep up on your assessment skills.
Know your normal and when to report these to your
instructor. Any abnormal findings should be shared
with your instructor in a timely fashion.
Keep the normal vital sign sheet given to you by Dr.
Burr

IMPAIRED PRACTICE
Students who are suspected of attending clinical
impaired may be sent for screening for illegal
substances and will be referred for further discipline
to program coordinator/Associated Dean and
potentially Students Rights and Responsibilities.
There should be no discussion of personal social

PRIORITIZE
THINK!
a.What do you see?
b. What other data do you need?
c.What does it mean?
Most importantly
d.What should you do about it?
Then do it. And go onto the next need.

MORE SUCCESS HINTS & TIPS

Treat the resident first. If the way the resident
looks isnt supported by the data, recheck both.
ABC if a resident becomes restless and/or
agitated or has a change in the LOC check
respiratory status. If decreased then act quickly
notify instructor or closest nurse.

MORE HINTS
Develop a plan for:
a.AM care
b. Assessment head to toe
c.Getting procedures done
Charting
Dont wait until 1100 to start
an assessment or AM care.
Assessments need to be
done EARLY FIRST.

ABCDEs
Assess Client, equipment & environment
Baseline Vitals & Communications/Care
Chart Review - H&P, labs, treatments
Drugs - meds at home vs in rehab (changes?)
Evaluation are all concerns identified in care plan
Re-evaluation any new issues identified, orders?

RESPECT THE RESIDENT

Remember Confidentiality
HIPAA- TIME AND PLACE FOR DISCUSSIONS!!!
Remember we are temporary guests.
Courtesy.
Caring
Chain of command
Instructor is first!!!

CRITICAL THINKING
Check residents
frequently for changes
and determine why any
changes have occurred.
Do not move on to help
staff with routine tasks
until full assessments and
all care is rendered to
your client
