Cut out of shapes
Colored shape manipulatives

Objective:
Given their prior knowledge about shapes, students will be able to orally identify the shapes that
they see which resemble an animal with 85% accuracy.
Introduction
At the carpet we will engage the students by having them put their thinking cap on. Students will
close their eyes and imagine the shape of a cats ears. Then we will ask students to focus on a
cats head and what shape it resembles. When students open their eyes we will have a large
stuffed animal and rehearse the shapes of the head and the ears. Students will turn and talk to
share their responses if they saw the same shapes in their head. Then we will break into two
groups.
Activity/ Procedure:

We will begin the discussion in each group by reviewing the different geometric shapes with
colored shape manipulatives. Then we will give each student a set of shapes. We will ask them to
color in the shapes different colors. For example: color all the circles red, color all the squares
orange, etc. as a guide, we will use big examples of shapes to demonstrate what each step is.
Then we will hold up different pictures of animals and ask the students what the animal is and
what shapes they can use to make up the body parts of the animal. Then we will use the different
shapes the students have and play the Hokey Pokey Shape Song. Students will get out of their
seat and we will use a different shape for each verse. For example: Triangle then the child
picks up the triangle and we sing You put your triangle in, you put your triangle out. You put
your triangle in and you shake it all about. You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself
around. Thats what its all about.
Assessment:
We will first assess the students ability to recognize shapes by holding up the different shapes
cut out. Then we will assess if the students can tell what shapes could make up the head, body,
legs, and tail of different animals. We are hoping that with describing the body parts, the students
will be able to determine what shape it is. Throughout the lesson we will have a chart of each
students name and the different shapes and quickly analyze if each of the students in our groups
grasp the concept of what each shape is. By charting student responses we will record their
mastery of shapes.

Homework Application
The students will be instructed to take the shapes they colored in during todays lesson home to
create an animal. The students must use at least four different shapes to create this animal and

glue it to a piece of construction paper. The next day we will share with the class what animal
each student made. We will allow students the freedom and option to create their own imaginary
animal.
Adaptations
We can provide pre-colored shapes for students who have difficulty with coloring and fine motor
skills. In addition, we can provide individual images of the different animals so students with
visual problems can see them clearer. We can have students stay in their seats to do the dance,
not to leave out any student that is physically handicapped. In addition we can have the students
pass around the stuffed animal and hold it while tracing the outline of the shape of the face, ears,
and head themselves.
