Activity Overview:
In this activity students will use an iPad to demonstrate their knowledge of mapping and
directional language. Students will work with three other peers, two students will stay in the
classroom using an iPad and the other two students will move around the school with their
iPad. The students in the classroom will determine a finishing location for the other students.
The students walking around the school will talk to the students in the classroom using
FaceTime to explain the directions they are choosing to take. Students will then swap roles.
Students are in control of their own learning and development because they must monitor if
they are using the correct language and following the correct path to get to certain locations.

Resources:

14 iPads (2 iPads per 4 students) equipped with FaceTime

Assessment:
FOR:
The teacher will take anecdotal notes about the students performances during the activity. This
information can be reflected on later in the unit.
AS:
Students will be given the opportunity to reflect on their learning when they compare their
directional language against their peers.
OF:
Not applicable to this lesson.

Modifications for Individual Students

The teacher will be available to help read the instructions to the Preps.
The teacher will determine the groupings, therefore allowing for certain students to be put
together (i.e. a very competent student paired with a student who is struggling to grasp the
concepts).
A School Officer will be available to help read the instructions to the Preps.
A School Officer will be available to walk with any students who are struggling or who may not
be doing the activity appropriately.
Picture cards have been used in the Student Oriented Instructions so that the Preps can
attempt to decipher what is being asked of them.

Student Oriented Instructions:

1. The teacher will place you in groups
of 4.

2. In the groups of 4 you will split into 2

groups.

3. Each pair will be given an iPad, both

must log into FaceTime.

4. One pair will stay in our classroom

and the other will move around the
school.

5. The pair staying in the classroom will

pick where the other pair must go to
in the school.

6. The pair that leaves the classroom

will talk to the other group about
where they are going and what they
have to go around.
7. Once the pair returns, you will swap
over and do the other job.
