Topic Sentence:
This author explains the different experiences of people who have been bullied and how much it
actually effects them.
Brief Summary:
The author of this scholarly article is anonymous. They talk about how people fail to understand
the consequences of bullying. They also explain that there is an empathy gap that really hurts
victims of bullying. They dont often get the support that they need. The author also backs up his

Rincon 2

claim by saying that research has proved that people have difficulty fully understanding the
effects of bullying. He/she also gives a small amount of statistics. The main reason for writing
this article is to talk about the empathy gap and how we can close it.
Analysis:
The author presents statements that have a very true statement. He talks about an empathy gap
that makes a good point about bullying. No one fully understands the effects of bullying and
what toll it has on the victims. The author gives statistics saying Statistics show that 25 percent
of public schools have reported that bullying occurs among students on a daily or weekly
basis(l), and 43 percent of students have experienced some form of cyber bullying(2). Those are
statistics that can support my thesis.
Evaluative statement:
This scholarly article can be really helpful while trying to back up my thesis statement. It gives
me viewpoints of victims that have been bullying and what they have to say about. It also gives
me statistics that will prove that bullying does happen and that people dont realize its
happening. Another source can then talk about the actual effects. This is a good article to back up
the beginning of my thesis statement.

MLA Source?
Hugh-Jones, S. and Smith, P. K. (1999), Self-reports of short- and long-term effects of bullying
on children who stammer. British Journal of Educational Psychology, 69: 141158.
Topic Sentence:
This author explains both long-term and short-term effects of bullying at a young age and can
give me support on the effects themselves.
Brief Summary:
The author of this scholarly article is Hugh Jones and Smith, P.K. It talks about the short term
and long term effects of bullying in the school environment, specifically elementary school. He
breaks down the effects in two categories, emotional and psychological. They talk about how
their school experiences relate to them being victimized by bullying.
Analysis:
This article breaks down the victims of bullying and how they become victims. They explain
their research experiment which consists of 276 respondents from the British Stammering
Association. Their method was a retrospective analysis of school experiences related to bullying,
and its effects, and was conducted through both semi-structured interviews and postal
questionnaires.
Evaluative statement:
This scholarly article can be very helpful. It explains a research experiment that the authors
themselves conducted. I can use their statistics to back up my thesis statement. It will help prove

Rincon 4

that children do get bullied at a young age and have effects that are caused by that. Another
scholarly article relates to this one and will sound very convincing when presenting my topic.

Topic Sentence:
This article doesnt talk about bullying at a young age, but shows statistics about how many
people as a whole a get bullied.
Brief Summary:
This isnt that much of an article but a newspaper instead. It talks about how a policy isnt
enough to stop bullying. On the right hand side of the article shows a list of percentages that
have to deal with bullying. It mainly focuses on bullying that is done in a job setting. It also has a
list of people that think it is necessary to work in a safe job setting.
Analysis:
On the right hand side of the newspaper, there are ten different questions or statements that
provide statistics saying if that statement is true or not. One statistic that stood out to me was that

Rincon 5

31% of people at an organization has quit due to bullying. That is a bigger percentage than I
would have thought. This kind of statistic can help me with my research topic.
Evaluative Statement:
Although this news article isnt too much of a help towards my topic, I can get little facts that
lead up to a solution about my topic. It can help with a counter argument using the person that is
bullyings point of view. I wouldnt say that it is a great source to use but it can be used a little. I
plan on using the statistics to come up with my own counter argument.

The purpose of this scholarly article is to relate both suicide and bullying and the effects that it
has.

Rincon 6

Brief Summary:
The purpose of this article is to review the research addressing the association of suicide and
bullying, from childhood to young adulthood, including cross-sectional and longitudinal research
findings. It also talks about the percentage of suicides caused by bullying. It also states that
bullying causes most of the suicidal rates.
Analysis:
It was interesting to go over this article. It focuses mostly on suicides that are caused by bullying
and to make a statement that it is mainly caused by bullying. The research also breaks it down by
sex. It sometimes depends on the victims sex as to what the outcome can be. Suicidal thoughts
largely depend on the sex.
Evaluative Statement:
I believe this is a really great article. It can help get in to detail about the long-term effects. It
isnt just any effect, but an effect that is mainly caused by bullying. This article can help put a lot
of emotion in my argument. The research method that is conducted can help my question as well.
It is an overall great article that can help prove many facts.
