Writing Analysis Lesson

Rationale:
The rationale for this lesson is to improve students
demonstration of the normal conventions of the English language.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.2 Conversations of Standard English
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standards English
capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.2.A Conversations of Standard English
Capitalize the first word in a sentence including the pronoun I.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.2.B Conversations of Standard English
Recognize and name end punctuation
Objectives:
Students will be able to use capitals, spaces, and punctuations in
a sentence.
Students will be able to write legible sentences using proper
letter formation.
Procedure:
Stage 1:
I will start the lesson off by asking the students to come to the
carpet: Alright fabulous writers, will you please join me on the
carpet?
The students will come to sit at the carpet, bringing their writing
journals and a pencil with them.
I will tell them that we are going to practice reading and writing
sentences together. We are going to read the sentence I saw a
cow together. After reading it, I am going to demonstrate how to
write each letter and every word. When I have completed that, I
will tell the students its their turn. They will then write each
sentence as it is in their workbooks.
I will model each letter, space, and all punctuation for the
students. I will also watch to ensure that each student is
watching me and isnt just copying the sentence.
Stage 2:
Next, I will tell the students that I think they are ready to copy
the next sentence. I will remind them to start their letters

correctly and to leave a space when you need to. They will copy
the sentence: I saw a goat.
While this is going on, I will walk around the classroom and
observe children as they are doing this. I will also assist if I notice
that they are having difficulty.

Stage 3:
Now it is their turn to write a sentence on lined paper. The
students can make up their own sentences or they can write one
that I give them, such as, I saw a boy. I will remind the students
to use a capital letter at the beginning, spaces between each
word, and punctuation at the end.
I will write the word boy on the board. Ill walk around and
observe children as they are doing this. If any students are
having difficulty with this stage, they will return to stage two and
they will have to copy me doing it as well.
Material:
A large board marked with writing lines
Children facing the board
Lined paper
Differentiation:
Giving those students different ways to complete the stages can
differentiate this lesson. Students can use different tools such as
stickers, and or Popsicle sticks so that they have a visual for
them see where the spaces go. Along with that, I can continue to
model the writing for the students until they get the hang of it.
Assessment:
This lesson will be assessed by teacher observation, and the
work the students are required to hand in.
Future Connections:
In the future to follow up after this lesson I will give the students
more complex sentences to copy, so that they can begin to
understand what full long sentences should look like.
