about natural disasters. Students will apply concepts
learned to real-world situations.
Lesson 1:
DOK Level 2: What major bodies of water and landforms
exist in the world? How do landforms develop?
DOK Level 3: How do plate tectonics relate to or cause
other natural disasters to occur?

Lesson 2:
DOK Level 2: What are tornadoes? What are their causes?
What areas are prone to tornadoes?
DOK Level 3: How does the importance of specific natural
resources relate to human survival and human endeavors?
How do tornadoes affect people and the environment?
Lesson 3:
DOK Level 2: How are volcanoes helpful? How are
volcanoes harmful?
DOK Level 3: Evaluate: Are volcanoes more helpful or
harmful? Explain and support using evidence.

Unit Summary

In this unit, students will be able to research about natural disasters and the effects of natural
disasters on people and the environment. Starting with a comprehensive overview of plate
tectonics in Lesson One, students will gain an overview of geography and where natural

disasters occur. Lesson Ones culminating project integrates PowerPoint technology skills in
the classroom with content researched. Lesson Two extends exploration of natural disasters
with its focus on the effects of tornadoes. Lesson Twos culminating project teaches students
how to use Microsoft Publisher to produce high-quality brochures while ensuring content
learned. Lesson Threes focus concerns the debate of whether volcanoes are harmful,
helpful, or both. Its ending project guides students into exploring the effects of constructive
and destructive forces in the form of a Prezi presentation tool.
