Part 1 & 2: Prepare for Reading
Activate Prior Knowledge:

Show the front of the book to class and ask:

o What do we see on the front of the book?
o Where do they come from?
o Around what time of the year do we see them?
o Do you have any memories of flowers?
o What else do we see when we look at flowers in a garden?
Talk about the book:
o What do you think the book will be about?
o What will we learn from the book?
Show some pages with pictures and make predictions:
o What do you think is happening on this page?

o What are some things on this page that you have seen before?
Vocabulary (Discuss the words in context):
o Plant, flower, tree, stem, grow, fruit, farmer, roots, soil, food,
space, water, petals, bud, pod, germination, seedling, and

pollination
Purpose setting questions:
o Why do you think we have plants?
o How do plants help us?

Part 3: Reading

Walk around while students are reading; observe where students are in

the book.
Watch for students who are trying to sound out the content vocabulary.
Have all students use a sticky note to comment on confusing words,

pronouncing words, or questions they have.

Also when students are getting towards the end of the book with
nothing written, remind them to write on their sticky note.

Part 4: After Reading

After students are finished reading, teacher will sit in the back at a
table where she will meet with students one on one. Asking each of
them about what they have read and looking at their notes. Also

specific questions like:

o Why do you think we have plants?
o How do plants help us?
Once students are done reading and while the teacher has one on one
conferences, the rest of the students will be filling out sequencing

worksheet on their own.

After each student talks with teacher, notes will be taken about how
student comprehended what they read. They will also be given a
compliment on their work.

When all students are finished the teacher will start a discussion about
the book, similar to the questions from the beginning of the lesson.

Part 5: Cross Curricular Activity

Science & Math: Have each student receive a pot. After they put
their name on it they are ready to take a scoop of soil for inside there pots.
Then have the students look at their pictures of seed in soil and how it
progresses also show a picture on the projector. Then handout a sunflower
seed to each student. Show them how to press it into the soil and cover the
hole back up. Then have students in groups put their pots by the window for
sunlight. Then continue with a diagram and explaining to students how seeds
need to be watered and get sunlight everyday.
Once all the students are back to their seats explain to them how to
predict an outcome. Have all students write a prediction of what their plant
will look like in two weeks and write it on the back of their growth chart.
Once the seeds start to sprout the students will begin to fill out their growth
charts. Using a ruler each week on Friday students will measure how much
their plant has grown and record it on their worksheet. Every two weeks the
students will make another prediction how much longer their plant will be on
the back of their growth chart. Until the end of the year when all students
will be able to take their flowers home.
Assessment:
The students will be assessed based on their comprehension of the
story they read and how well they illustrate on the worksheet. They will also
receive points for measuring their flower everyday correctly and for making
predictions.
