Case 1 Lesson Plan: Our Solar System
Overview of Lesson:
Students will begin the lesson with an overview of the solar system, and
testing for general knowledge of the students. Then, the instructor will play the
Youtube video, and finish lecture by naming each of the planets, and explaining how
to say their names with some general information. Students will then begin activities
to assess knowledge of the content.
Description of Learners/Environment, Intended Learning Goals, and Lesson Content:
Description of Learners
o Low english ability
o Low level learners
o Same amount of boys & girls
o Socioeconomic skill - not high (hispanic 78%)
o 6th and 7th grade (12-14 years old)
Description of Learning Environment
o Very little use of technology
o 20 students per classroom
o Personal technology
o E-boards in most rooms
Intended Learning Goals
o Students will be able to work on pronunciation of terms, as well as
gain greater science knowledge about the solar system.
Lesson Content
o Students will use a variety of technology, including E-boards, and a
Youtube video to enhance science knowledge of the solar system and
to enhance English language skills.
Learning Objectives
Given a list of all planets of the solar system, students will be able to write
and clearly pronounce each planets name.
Given a list of 3 planets, student will be able to give 3 facts about the planets.
Students will be able to describe the solar system and its key components - such as
planets and their characteristics within 30-45 minutes.
Standards:
1. Expressing information and ideas in formal oral presentations on academic
topics. SL.6.46; L.6.1,3
2. Listening actively to spoken English in a range of social and academic
context. SL.6.1,3,6; L.6.1,3,

Required Materials:
Printer paper (1 per student)
Colored pencils, markers, pencils
Notebook paper
Interactive E-board
Youtube video: Solar System Lesson for Kids
Procedure:
Start off with asking the students what they already know about the solar
system. Ask the class if they can name any, or all of the planets. Attempt to
get a baseline to begin lesson.
Then answer the actual question, What is the solar system?
Play youtube video (5 minutes).
After the video, begin discussion by telling the students all the names of the
planets of the solar system.
Have students repeat names after teacher says them one at a time.
Then, have students write names of planets on piece of notebook paper.
Use the E-board to have students come up and write each planets name on
the board.
Talk about each planet and the special characteristics (EX: shape, colors,
weather, living conditions, moons, rings, etc.). Also, discuss the order of each
planet according to how far it is from the sun. Instructors can also introduce
the idea of astronauts, and explain how some have been to planets other
than Earth, or the Moon.
Use the E-board to have students come up and arrange planets in order of
how close they are to the sun.
Then, have students use printer paper to draw out one of the planets.
o Label the planet and list three defining characteristics.
Come together as a class and reflect on the information that they
provided with their drawing.
Assessment
Students will be assigned to a group of 3-4 students. Each group will need
to know the order of the planets and look up the characteristics. On top of this, each
group will be assigned a different planet and need to find out if anyone has landed
on that planet. If no one has landed there, describe why. This activity will be
completed in the next class period. Students will need to come to class with some
prerequisite knowledge, such as what they learned in the lesson. Some information
about astronauts will be helpful as well.

Evaluation
Students will be able to give an oral presentation of the order of the planets
and some characteristics they found from research. Also, each group will present if
anyone has landed on the planet they were assigned.

August, D. D., McCardle, P., Shanahan, T., & Burns, M. (2014). Developing literacy
in english language learners: findings from a review of the experimental
research. School Psychology Review, 43(4), 490-498.
This article is about the different methods of developing literacy among
English language learners. It discusses which methods are most effective in teaching
ELL students in school. These methods from the article are from experimental
research. Some of the most effective methods in teaching literacy are oral reading,
comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. For example, learning vocabulary helps
students learn how to understand content in certain texts. Lastly, this article also
provides aspects of instruction for teachers. Practices also proven effective are
repetition, scaffolding, and capitalizing.
Overall, this article is very valuable when understanding the different
components for teaching English learners. It can be useful for any teacher for
figuring out how to teach students who are not fluent in the English language. This
summary does discuss how to help with lesson plan development. It portrays what
practices one should incorporate to have an effective learning environment.
Nomass, B. B. (2013). The impact of using technology in teaching english as a
second language. English Language and Literature Studies, 3(1), 111-116.
In this article, it talks about using technology to help students learn English as
a second language. It talks about the possibility of using certain types of technology
in the classroom to make the depth of lessons more impactful to the students. As a
result, the students tend to learn better and prefer to learn off of a computer.
Granite, the students might not be too digitally literate, but they gained the most
knowledge from learning on technology.
After reviewing this article, it helped us make the decision to integrate more
technology use in our lesson plans. It opened our eyes to realizing how some
students learn better off with technology and some learn better from the traditional
teaching style.
