Chechen Terrorism (Russia, Chechnya, Separatist)

Where in the Russian Federation would you find Chechnya?

Chechnya is found in North Caucasus of Russia the southern part near


Georgia.

How are the Chechens different from the Russians?

They have a large Muslim ethnic group that make up their region, while
Russia is orthodox. The Chechens have been resisting Russias rule.
3. Did the Chechens gain independence from tsarist Russia after the 1917 Russian
Revolution? Explain.
At times the Chechens were independent. When they joined the soviet
socialist republic, later the Soviet Union seized control over the Chechens
which made them become no longer independent.

What did Stalin do to the Chechens during WWII? Why did he do this?

Stalin forced the Chechens to leave their land because he thought that
they were working with the Nazi invaders.

Who changed their fate, and how was their fate changed?

Nikita Khrushchev changed when he de-Stalinization and let them come


back to their homeland.

What was the first Chechen War? [Who started it? When? Why? Results?]

The first Chechen War had started in 1994 when Russia tried to take over
the control of the Chechen Mountain. Russia started it but they did not
excel to win the mountain and Yeltsin signed a treaty.

When was the second Chechen War? [Who started it? When? Why? Results?]

The second war in 2000 occurred when Dagestan invaded and Russia then
bombed causing it to be the second war. Thousands of Russians and
Chechens were killed and wounded and the Chechen separatist activity
disappeared.
8. Prior to his death in 2006, the separatist Basayev was deemed to be
responsible for the most notorious event to that point in time. Identify this event.
How many deceased militants in this event were NOT Chechen? Why might this be
a significant change in the Chechen Wars?
When he ordered to attack a school in Beslan. More than three hundred
people died and only three or four of those killed were Chechens. The
violence was directed more toward an individual office or government
instead of a group.

9. According to the American ambassador to Russia, what terrorist group is


assisting the Chechen rebels? How/why might Americans who were once
sympathetic to the Chechen cause for independence from the Russian Federation
have changed?
The Islamic International Peacekeeping Brigade is the primary channel for
Islamic funding of the Chechen guerillas. They had links to al-Qaeda on the
Arabian Peninsula. America doesnt not negotiate with terrorist/terrorism.
The Americans have deal with terrorism from these terrorist groups
already, like 9/11. They know what its like to be under attack so they now
are on Putins side when it comes to terrorism.
10. Do you believe the Russians should grant Chechnya their independence? Why
or why not? [Answer this question in paragraph format (minimum of six
sentences).]
I believe that Russia should grant Chechnya their independence because
the rebel groups will only become more powerful. I think Russia is a big
enough nation on its own, they do not need more land. Russia already has
economic issues and if the keep fighting with Chechnya they will have
more economic issues because of all the money spent on war and
reconstruction. I think that if the gave Chechnya their independence they
could eventually get a long and become allies and or trade partners
because Chechnya got what they wanted.
