Summary
Ukraine leaders think that Russia is preparing to attack
their country on a broad level. European Commission
President Jean-Claude Juncker reported this Tuesday after
coming home from a summit in Kiev that was happening
at the same time as violence was becoming fresh in
Ukraines east. He wanted to ease tensions with Russias
president, Petro Poroshenko, by avoiding comments on s
possible bid to join the NATO. The Organization for
Security and Cooperation warned about an increase in
violence in eastern Ukraine where a cease-fire, signed in
the Belarus city of Minsk, was supposed to stop fighting
with pro-Russian separatists. The U.S. warned Ukraine of
a Russian arms buildup in and around the east. However,
Moscow has denied that they are supporting or arming
the rebels. Juncker and Poroshenko have expressed real
fears of Russias next steps. They fear that Russias
intentions seem to be fueling Kievs insistence on an
international peacekeeping mission for eastern Ukraine.
They also fear that a NATO bid would make Ukraine a
military opponent and Juncker has advised Poroshenko
not to talk publicly about these aspirations. Ukraine was
using the summit to push for progress on the EU talking
about visa-free access and an eventual path to joining the
EU. The EU has offered the Ukraine billions of dollars and
they said that if they keep reforming, theyll keep
supporting. However, Juncker says that both Mr.

Poroshenko and Mr. Yatsenyuk are heavily engaged in

efforts to liberalize the economy, crack down on
corruption and bolster the judiciary.
Reaction

My reaction to the article is that I am surprised.

Ukraine has to be careful with their actions
revolving around going against Russia. If they take
the bid from NATO, it will make them more
susceptible to Russia for them to attack the
Ukraine. Because the Ukraine is so close to Russia,
its going to be hard for them to join the EU
because Russia will then see them as a threat. Im
glad that the EU is still supporting the Ukraine and
sending them money though because Russia could
seriously be a huge risk for them. I think less
violence needs to happen and more actual
progress to happen. However, it is good that
Poroshenko and Yatsenyuk are still working on
efforts to help the country in this horrible time.
