Nuclear Waste: The Controversial Debate

Richard A Muller Author of Nuclear Waste and Professor of Physic at the University of
California talks about one facility in the Nevadas Yucca Mountain Range. The construction of a
facility to hold nuclear waste material for 100,000 of years. What precautions have been taken by
local, state and federal government address the safety of the public? It`s a key a component to
protect the water supply of Las Vegas and other cities in the surrounding areas. Gerald Graff
Professor of English and Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and writer of Hidden
Intellectualism. Gerald Graff discuss it takes Street Smarts and academic work. These are key
developmental approaches when dealing with highly radioactive material Richard A Muller
argues the great importance of nuclear waste storage facilities for environmental and National
Security elements Gerald Graff agrees with his critical outline of writing that Richard utilizes.
It takes a high level of thinking when dealing with Emergency Management planning. Nuclear
production of electricity is key to the United States as we utilize electronics in our daily lives. We
also use nuclear weapons to protect our homeland from unwanted invasions. Every Nuclear
Reactor creates a radioactive by product know as plutonium. Which is highly dangerous to the
average citizen. What should be done to store these materials?
Gerald Graff writes it takes a person with hidden capabilities to achieve greatness. Richard
articles shows a complex situation such as storing nuclear material and how complex it has
become in trying to determine a safe location. It takes a high level of thinking to build and

maintain a large facility from potential terrorist attacks. Tactical street smarts and military
precision are necessary to keep to build the facility into the mountains. Billions of dollars have
gone into this project according to Richard Muller statements in his article.
Gerald Graff states that Nor do we consider one of the major reasons why schools and colleges
overlooked the intellectual potential of street smarts: The fact that we associate those street
smarts with anti-intellectual concerns (198). He is using this statement to say we need to
educate students on what they use in our daily lives. So that we can solve major issues that affect
the world. It starts with small problem solving techniques used in mathematics and then grows
into complex calculus problems.
If we don`t develop these skills in our youths educational system. Then how are we going to
solve large complex problems? That use a complex way of thinking. Which Richard a Muller
talks about in his article on nuclear waste. More than 600 Earth quakes of Magnitude 2.5 and
higher have occurred within 50 miles in the last decade alone, The Yucca Mountains (Muller
