Exclusive Summary
Our report is about Siegfried finding a part time job that gives him the opportunities that can
work with his school schedule that also involves his field of study in culinary arts. Siegfried
found 3 potential jobs that benefit him, school-wise and financially.
Our group came up with a couple of ideas that fit a criteria chart in which we made. We
brainstormed and divided research using the criteria, and have made recommendations to the
solution with the information gathered. Our plan of action was set up to focus on job
opportunities that are of best fit to Siegfried. The top three were kept and the others were
dismissed. We decided to search for part time jobs through: job fairs, the internet, friends, family,
local restaurants. He wants a job that will work with his school schedule and will give him
experience in the field he is studying for. Sigmund found 3 potential job opportunities that will
benefit him and meet the criteria of his expectations. The first is at a restaurant called Caf
Zupas. They have a 12-week program that involves him being an intern to become a full time
manager. Starbucks is a caf we found offering an undergraduate degree program online. We
have also considered him working as a dietary aide where he would help cook for residents at
their home or at a hospital.

Out of the 3 potential jobs, our recommendation is Starbucks. This job is the most reasonable
that fit in our criteria for Siegfrieds problem. It balanced out with his school schedule and
offered tuition reimbursement, steady pay checks, secure, reasonable income.
Project Description
Siegfried is currently attending the community college studying Culinary Arts. He has a high
school diploma and he is single and has no children. He is 20 years old and has a little brother
and a little sister. They lost both of their parents in a car accident earlier that year. Siegfried now
has to support himself and his siblings. He needs to find a job that can work with his school
schedule and that also falls within the following criteria: Siegfried is able apply principles of
effective communication that he has learned in class, it cost less than $100 of investment costs,
pays relatively well, e.g. $10 per hour, work location is relatively close to his home, offers some
sort of benefits, e.g. healthcare, tuition reimbursement, etc., it offers a flexible schedule, offers
opportunities for advancement, and offers paid vacation at least once a year.
Methods
The start of our group project consisted of my team and I deciding on a problem worth solving.
With meetings and preparation we created a hypothetical life based off of a case study given to
us in class. In our meetings we have created a team contract in which lists our group norms and
roles in the case study for an evenly dispersed and productive work schedule (Appendix 1).

Part 1: Problem Question:

We have mutually agreed on a revised open-ended question for Siegfried, which he is trying to
solve and the problem is: Which job opportunities are available that can work with Siegfrieds
school schedule, and that involves his field of study?
Part 2: Analysis of the Problem:
A. Characteristics: What are the symptoms of the problem?
Siegfried is looking for a part-time job that will blend well with his experiences of his
field of study in college (culinary arts). The job hours need to be flexible with his school
schedule. He would like it to be relatively close since he is the new guardian of his little
brother and sister, and is worried about who will watch them while he is gone. Getting a
job would also make him able to provide for them so it is mandatory that he has landed
one within 4 weeks. He is 21 years of age, with a high school diploma so he assumes that
getting a job will be possible, however is not completely knowledgeable of the
opportunities available.

B. Stakeholders: What persons or groups of persons are affected by this problem? How does
this problem impact each group?
The people who are going to be affected by Sigmund getting a job are: boss, coworkers,
younger brother and sister, neighbors, friends, classmates, and self. His boss will be
affected because he is gaining a new member in the company however if for some reason
he cannot make it to his shift then his boss has to find a replacement. Coworkers are
affected because they will be the ones to replace Sigmund if he missed a shift. His little
brother and sister are affected because of the fact that he is their provider and they depend
on him. Also if he is at work and has to pick up his siblings from school and cannot leave
they would be waiting for him or a ride. He would then have to find a neighbor or a
friend to pick them up from school, which makes them affected. His classmates will be
affected in working more while working together in projects if he misses a day of school
to work. Getting this job affects Siegfried since it makes him a valid and important to his
community as his occupation forms a trickle-down effect throughout the community.
C. History: What solutions have been tried in the past to solve similar problems? How well
have these solutions worked? Whom have these solutions helped? Whom have they
hindered? How do you know?
He has attempted to do online schooling so that he can be home to look after his siblings
and be able to have a less stressful life juggling work and school. This solution did not
work because he was missing the personal interaction with his instructor which led him to
realize he needs to set time aside for attending school. However this solution helped his
siblings because they spent more time with him although it hindered him personally
because it affected his grades from not getting a full understanding of the material.
D. Policies and politics: What regulations, professional requirements, political
considerations, and/or ethical expectations might impact your solutions?
Flexibility with work hours is a huge factor due to the fact that he is also raising children.
The wage given to Siegfried is very important as well to support multiple people.
Commuting distance is a factor to take into consideration for convenience. He needs to
consider an internship/apprenticeship vs. other jobs. Benefits and perk programs should
also be offered because insurance is critical while supporting a family. A Food Handlers
Permit is mandatory in most if not all places that serve and handle food so he must make
sure he has one, and they are usually around $10.00. Political affiliations that he agrees or
disagrees with may also affect where he works since multiple industries support factory
farming, and similar things.
E. Resources: What references did you consult to get ideas for good solutions? (You are
required to use your communication text as one of your references.) Who else did you
talk to? What did you learn from these references? How much time and money are you
willing to commit?

Academic advising, job fairs, job search websites, and the Utah
Department of Workforce Services are great sources of information
regarding job positions and internship/apprenticeships available.
Communication at Work is a great source of information regarding
different aspects within the workforce such as creating a resume, labor
laws, and information about the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission (EEOC). Employees of local restaurant, friends and family
may also be good consultants too. Siegfried is willing to invest between
20-30 hours a week and the job must pay at least $10.00 per hour for
him to spend an initial starting fee of $50.00.
Part 3: Criteria
A. General Goal: To find a solution in which solves Siegfrieds problem of

Part 5: Implementation
A. Optimal Solutions:
1. Looking for Internships (Zupas).
2. Working for Starbucks.
3. Finding a job being a Dietary Aide.

B. Steps:
1. Internship at Zupas:
Caf Zupas: apply online to Caf Zupas. Show up to the interview on time with your
resume. Ask the interviewer about the 12-week internship program. They will tell you to
show up to an SHMR conference to talk to you more in depth about the full-time position
about being a manager in one of the restaurants (para. 1). You will then receive
management training and will need to shadow a current manager (para. 3) at Zupas (4-6
weeks). Once the 12 weeks are over, you start your career as a full time manager.
2. Working for Starbucks:
Starbucks created a program for all their partners (employees) to become eligible to have
their tuition completely covered for a full four years at Arizona State University. Their
Starbucks College Achievement Plan was created so that their partners have the
opportunity to pursuit the American Dream (1). The program is only available for
partners who complete the application process although all partners are eligible to apply.
Starbucks has made the application process simple, which includes only a few steps.
Existing partners must visit the College Plan Welcome Tool to learn about the program
and begin speaking with an enrollment counselor. After applying to Arizona State
University and completing the Secure Financing section, which includes completing a
free FAFSA application which could potentially offer Federal Pell Grants and other
student aid (2). After registering for classes and beginning the new semester, accepted
partners will become reimbursed. Starbucks will reimburse each partner at the end of the
semester when partners have completed credits. Partners are reimbursed six weeks after
each semester, which will appear in their paycheck (2). Once the partner completes
graduation they have the opportunity to continue a path with Starbucks or explore other
opportunities outside of Starbucks (1).
3. Dietary Aide:
Find a location that works for you whether it is a childcare facility, hospital, senior living
center, or any other healthcare facility. Obtain a food handlers permit for that county
where you will work (2). Apply to that location on their website. Go to the interview and
take your resume with you. One year of experience is preferred but if you do not have
any experience then obtain some training for a few weeks provided by the location (1). It
varies by location but most companies will provide their own on the job training. After
training you are able to start working as a dietary aide.

Part 6: Conclusion
The job that works best with Siegfrieds school schedule is working at a Starbucks coffee shop. It
is the best choice for him because it offers great benefits and a flexible work schedule. It pays
relatively well for a new hire and the work location is relatively close to his home because there
are Starbucks all throughout the city. Because of this job Siegfried is now able to support his two

younger siblings and himself while attending the community college online to further his
education in the culinary arts.
