Interpretation of Results

Experiment 7 has two parts which is about Phase Shift Keying and Quadrature
Phase Shift Keying. In practical number 1 the concept of phase modulation by
changing the phase of a carrier in response to a modulating waveform was
investigated. Based on the experiment if the data word pattern is varied the
spectrum of the PSK waveform changes because in PSK the phase changes for
every data word pattern. Also as the data word varies the amplitude of the carrier
frequency component doesnt remain constant because when the phase shift
between the two states representing binary 1 and binary 0 is +/-90, the waveform
has no dc component in the modulating waveform thus theres no carrier frequency
component or the carrier is suppressed and when the phase shift between the two
states representing binary 1 and binary 0 Is between zero and +/-90 the waveform
of the signal transmitted will have a reduced carrier. The number and magnitude of
the sideband frequency components changes for different switch settings because
as the phase shift is increased from zero towards +/-90 , the sidebands will
increase. When both data switches are set to zero the carrier frequency is the only
component present because the phase was shifted. When both data switches are
set to one the carrier frequency and side band frequencies are present in the
spectrum because theres no phase shift occurred. When both of the data switches
were set to A the binary data the waveform represents 10101 because A represents
1010 in binary. Based on observation as the phases control increases the carrier
decreases while the gain of the sidebands increase.
In practical number 2 the demodulation of PSK signals which have phase
shifts less than +/-90 was investigated.
