This document contains three gear strength problems. The first problem asks to determine the bending stress on a steel spur pinion transmitting 1.5 hp at 700 rpm. The second asks to determine the horsepower rating of a pinion with specified parameters and an allowable bending stress of 10 kpsi. The third asks to select a face width for a gear drive transmitting 1.5 hp based on an allowable contact stress of 100 kpsi.

left find the angular velocity of the output shaft for an input velocity of 1,000 RPM. Give velocity sense for output.
In the planetary system at
left determine the speed and sense of rotation of shaft A for an input speed of 1000 RPM at shaft D.
In the planetary gear
system at left, find the output angular velocity and sense, for an input of 60 RPM.
Gear Strength Problems
1. A steel spur pinion has a diametral pitch of 12 teeth/in, 16 teeth cut full-depth with a 20 pressure angle, and a face width of 3/4 in. This pinion is expected to transmit 1.5 hp at a speed of 700 rev/min. Determine the bending stress. 2. Determine the horsepower rating of a 20 full-depth spur pinion having 18 teeth, a diametral pitch of 16 teeth/in, and a face width of 0.75 in. The speed is 1,000 rev/min, and the allowable bending stress is 10 kpsi. 3. A gear drive consists of a 16-tooth 20 spur pinion and a 48-tooth cast-iron gear having a pitch of 12 teeth/in. For a power input of 1.5 hp at a pinion speed of 700 rev/min, select a face width based on an allowable contact stress of 100 kpsi.
