Probability
1. There are 12 oranges, 14 apples and 16 pears. A fruit is picked at random from the basket.
Find the probability that the fruit picked is
(a) an orange,
(b) an apple,
(c) not a pear.
2. Mr Chua has 8 red ties, 10 blue ties and 22 grey ties. He randomly selects a tie. What is
the probability that the tie he selects is
(a) a grey tie,
(b) not a red tie,
(c) either a red tie or a blue tie.
3. One letter is chosen randomly from the word INSPIRATIONAL. Find the probability that
the letter chosen is
(a) the letter I,
(b) the letter A,
(c) not a vowel.
4. A card is drawn at random from a standard deck of 52 playing cards.
(a) Find the probability that a Jack is drawn.
(b) Find the probability that either a king or an ace is drawn.
5. There are 25 cats and some dogs at a pet shop. If the pet shop owner randomly selects a
pet, the probability that he selects a dog is 3/8. Find the number of dogs at the pet shop.
6. There are 12 men and (14 + y) women on a bus. Given that the probability that a male
passenger alights at the next bus stop is 2/5, find the value of y.
