Summer 2015 Job Announcement

Position: Upward Bound Summer Residential Advisor (3 positions


total)

Date Range:
June 1-2 (training); June 12-July 24, 2015 (summer program).
Location:
Windward Community College (June 15-26) and UH-Manoa (June 28-July 24).

Duties:

Supervise and mentor 40+ high school youth in a residential pre-college


summer program.
Coordinate and lead residential life activities including large-group games,
icebreakers, small-group discussions, and other social activities like talent
show, volleyball, etc.
Each RA will have primary responsibility for 10-14 high school participants in
areas like counseling, homework checks, conflict resolution, and group
dynamics.
Tutor high school students in subject areas including reading, math, science,
Hawaiian language, college study skills, and more.
Enforce rules and safety, including periodic bed checks overnight.
Attend weekly field trips and daily meals with students in a supervisory
capacity.
Model positive, cooperative, and mature college-going attitude.
Maintain effective communication and cooperation with program staff.

General Work Schedule & Compensation:

June 1: Training at Windward Community College.


June 2: CPR, First Aid and AED Training
June 12-June 26 (daytime): Supervision of students at Windward Community
College. In general 2:30 PM -5:30 PM with some longer days for field trips.
June 28-July 24 general schedule: This is an over-night live-in position at
UH-Manoa that requires you to be present in the residence hall at UHManoa and/or at all program-sponsored events to provide student
supervision. General schedule:

Sundays (except June 28 which is longer): 4:30 PM-11:00 PM plus overnight.


Mondays: 6:30 AM-8:15 AM and 4:30 PM-11:00 PM plus overnight
Tuesdays: 6:30 AM-8:15 AM and 4:30 PM-11:00 PM plus overnight
Wednesdays: 6:30 AM-8:15 AM and 4:30 PM-11:00 PM plus overnight
Thursdays: 6:30 AM-8:15 AM and 4:30 PM-11:00 PM plus overnight
Fridays: 6:30 AM-4:30 PM
Saturdays: off duty (except June 27 from 2:00-5:00)
There are two separate weekend overnight field trips: June 12-14 and July 10-12.

Salary: $8.45/hour minimum (total for summer: approximately $2600). Also


included is a private room at the UH-Manoa Hale Aloha Towers (June 28-July
24) plus meals when supervising students.

Minimum qualifications:

At least 24 college credits earned and in good academic standing.


Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.
Experience leading/facilitating small groups.
Must have a Drivers License.

Desirable qualifications:
Previous experience mentoring or tutoring high school youth.
Conflict resolution skills and experience.
Some residential life experience and/or Upward Bound employment
experience.
Current or former member of a TRIO program.
Enrolled college student at any postsecondary institution (graduate or
undergraduate) for spring 2015 and fall 2015 semesters.

Purpose of Upward Bound:


Upward Bound is a year-round pre-college program
designed to generate in high school students the skills and motivation
necessary for success in education beyond secondary school. Student
admission into Upward Bound is a privilege and is based upon grades,
character, attitude, and academic goals. All participants are high school
students from low-income families and families where parents have not
earned bachelors degrees. Students attend Castle, Kahuku, Kailua, or
Kalaheo High.
