Scooby Doo and the Mystery Thief

Shaggy, Scooby, Velma, Daphne, and Fred have a new mystery on their hands. They were on vacation at the beach when they learned about a
jewel robbery at a nearby jewelry store. The team went to investigate and found several clues in the glass case the jewels were stolen from. They
found a strand of red hair, a smudge of peanut butter, and a receipt for a black mask similar to the one the thief was wearing. The owner of the store
shared the list of people who had been in the store the day of the robbery. Mrs. Shell purchased a pair of diamond earrings that she thought looked
wonderful with her bright red hair. Bobby, a package delivery boy who always had food stains on his clothes, came in to deliver a shipment of
jewelry boxes. Mr. Brown came in to purchase a necklace for his wifes birthday, but he did not have enough money. Ms. Carpenter looked around
the store for a new watch. Two employees and the owner of the store were also at the jewelry shop the day of the robbery. Who do you think the thief
is? Think about a way you could prove that the person you suspect is the thief.

Critically Endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtles
The Hawksbill Sea Turtle is a critically endangered species. There are many reasons why Hawksbills are disappearing from our oceans. The
Hawksbills shell is beautiful and the turtles are oftentimes killed to make their shells into jewelry and other decorations. The turtles are also facing
pollution and destruction of their coral reef habitats, giving them fewer places to live. Another reason for the disappearance of many Hawksbill Sea
Turtles is bycatch. When fishermen fish the oceans for a certain type of fish or sea creature they also catch other animals they were not fishing for.
Hawksbills are especially at risk for being caught in bycatch and many times the turtles are dead when the fishermen realize they have been caught.
The Hawksbill Sea Turtle faces many challenges to survival and they are at risk of becoming extinct (World Wildlife Fund).
How to Help the Hawksbills
The Hawksbill Sea Turtle is a critically endangered species; this means the Hawksbill is at a major risk of becoming extinct or gone forever.
There are many ways to help save the Hawksbill from becoming extinct. First, it is important to educate or help people learn about the danger of
killing these animals. This will help reduce the number of people killing, buying, and selling turtle shells. Hawksbills are sometimes accidentally
killed as part of the bycatch of the fishing industry and using different equipment could help decrease make the number of turtles accidently killed by
fishing. Circular shaped hooks are one example of equipment that can still catch fish, but not turtles. Countries can also pass laws that protect the
turtles habitat and make catching the turtles illegal. People can donate money to organizations like the World Wildlife Fund to continue to research
the turtles and understand how to help the turtles survive (World Wildlife Fund).

Problem/Solution and Cause/Effect Assessment:
Directions: Read the following passages and identify whether the passages use the Cause and Effect or Problem and Solution organizational strategy.
1. Earths temperatures are growing warmer and warmer because of global warming. Global warming is the result of several human activities.
Driving cars, burning coal for electricity, and other activities release carbon dioxide into Earths atmosphere. The increased amount of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere keeps heat from the sun trapped beneath Earths atmosphere, causing temperatures to rise around the globe
(National Geographic).

2. The students in Mrs. Whites class noticed that there is a lot of litter around their schoolyard. Fast food bags, water bottles, and cardboard
boxes are along the entrance to the school and even near the playground. A group of five students formed a Litter Committee to organize
ways to make the school a cleaner place. At the first meeting Jimmy suggested that the school needed more trashcans outside so that people
could throw their trash away easily, instead of walking over to the one trashcan in front of the school door. Sasha suggested that the school
should host a clean up day, where parents came to collect trash and do other work like planting flowers to make the school more beautiful.
Josh suggested that the students write letters to the local police department explaining why littering should be enforced more strongly. The
committee votes on all these ideas and shares their ideas with the principal.

Cause/Effect and Problem/Solution Identification Passages

The Black Rhino is a critically endangered species, meaning the species is at a large risk of becoming extinct. There are several reasons why
the Black Rhino population is becoming smaller. In the past it was very popular to hunt Black Rhinos for sport, this led to the first major decrease in
the number of Black Rhinos living in the wild. Rhino horns are used in some Asian folk medicines and there is a high demand for these medicines.
Poachers kill rhinos and sell their horns for lots of money. The Black Rhino has also experienced habitat changes that make it difficult for them to
have enough space to roam and a safe space away from poachers and human settlements (World Wildlife Fund).
The Black Rhino is a critically endangered species, meaning the species is at large risk of becoming extinct. In order to help these animals
survive, many countries are creating strict laws to punish poachers who kill rhinos to sell their horns. Scientists are also classifying rhinos to track
them and match their DNA to rhinos that are killed by poachers. This can help lawyers prove that poachers killed a certain animal. Organizations like
the World Wildlife Fund are relocating Rhinos to safer habitats where they can be better protected from humans. One of these projects flew rhinos in
a helicopter to their new habitats. People can also donate money to organizations that work to protect the Black Rhino population so they can
continue to protect the animals and learn more about them (World Wildlife Fund).
Smith Elementary created a new school rule that does not allow students to chew gum anywhere on the school grounds. The principal and
teachers voted on this rule at last weeks faculty meeting. Mrs. Brown explained why the decision was made in an interview with the school paper.
Mrs. Brown said, In my own classroom and in many others, gum has been found under desks, stuck in the carpet, and even stuck on the walls. This
is unacceptable treatment of school property. Mrs. Green was also interviewed, My students have become very distracted by gum chewing. Instead
of doing their work they trade gum with other students and spend lots of time looking for gum in their desks and backpacks. Mr. White described an
incident in his classroom, One day during math, one student accidently got their gum stuck in another students hair. The poor student had to cut her
hair to get the gum out. As you can see, gum chewing has become a major distraction, mess, and disturbance at Smith Elementary.
There have been increased reports of bullying at Smith Elementary in the last month. The principal, teachers, and students have come up with
several suggestions to decrease bullying at Smith. Firstly, the school will highlight two Be Kind stories on the morning announcements each day.
These stories are about a student who did something kind for another student. Any teacher, student, or adult at the school can nominate a Be Kind
story. The school also chose to use stricter punishments for students who are guilty of bullying. These students serve one week at silent lunch and
must write a letter of apology to the person they bullied. Teachers are also taking steps to minimize bullying. They are teaching new mini-lessons on
how to help a friend who is bullied, how to recognize bullying, and how to respond to problems that occur between peers.
