MULTIMEDIA
PRESENTATION

Topic:
For this presentation my topic will be community helpers. Community helpers are
members of the community whose job allows all the individuals in the community to live life
comfortably. This presentation will introduce the kindergarten class to various community
helpers and what they role is in the community. Each student will gain an understanding of each
job and why that job is helpful in the community. Children will be able to apply this information
to their everyday life and hopefully be inspired to aspire to be one of the community helpers
discussed in the presentation.
The Audience:
For this multimedia presentation I will be presenting the material to a kindergarten
classroom where the children range from 4-5years old. The children are in the middle of the
school year and are very familiar with multimedia presentations and really enjoy engaging in
them. The children in the classroom have been exposed to various stories and learning
experiences that involve community helpers but they have not been exposed the actual term
community helper. The children have been engaging in a lot of imaginary play where they are
acting out the jobs in which the members of their families hold. For example, Sarahs father is a
nurse and she has been using the dolls in the classroom as her patients and giving them checkups. This has been a recurring pattern in the classroom so I have decided to dedicate this lesson
to understand the jobs in which people perform in our community. In my classroom there is a
child who is on the Autism Spectrum. This child learns best with concrete objects and materials.
For this assignment I have created community helper cutouts (Artifact 1) that the child can
look through and use as a learning tool while I am explaining each community helper and their
role.

Objectives:
1. After viewing the presentation, students differentiate between the jobs of the community
helpers mentioned in the presentation with at least 90% accuracy.
2. After viewing the presentation the student will match simple descriptions of work that
community helpers do with the names of the specific community helper with at least 90%
accuracy.
3. After viewing the presentation the student will act out the jobs of three community
helpers using the props provided in the dramatic play area.

Identify Resource Media:

The type of media that will be used in my multimedia presentation will be a video that
will be played during the presentation. This video will be accessed while viewing slide 5 (the
firefighter). I was able to find an excellent video from www.YouTube.com that is able to show
the children in the classroom what a firefighter does when there is an emergency. This video is in
a cartoon format that I believe will appeal to my target audience. This video allows the children
in the classroom to be able to learn about what a firefighter does as well as learn some essential
lessons about fire safety. By allowing the children to watch this video I want them to gain an
understanding of what a firefighter does and how they are able to help people in the community.
I would also like the children learn a little about fire safety.
ISTE Standards:
The National Educational Technology Standards for Students standard that I believe is
being fulfilled in this presentation would be Standard 1 which states that students demonstrate
creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using
technology.
1b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
The children in the classroom will be spilt into groups and assigned a different
community helper. The children will then be asked to create a story that describes their
community helpers and record the scene using an IPad. I will combine all the scenes done to
create a community helper movie for the children and parents to view.

I believe that Standard 6. Technology operations and concepts which states that Students
demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations will also be
demonstrated in this lesson.
6d. Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies
The children in the classroom have been exposed to using the camera on the IPads in the
classroom but they have not yet been taught to use a digital camera. For this lesson I would like
the children in the classroom to walk around our community and take pictures of community
helpers, using the digital camera. The children can also take images of a building where
community helpers would work. The children will then learn how to use the digital camera.
Follow-up Activities:
1) Using the knowledge learned in the presentation the children will be divided into
groups and given a community helper. The children will then make a scene to act out
and be recorded. I will go around a record all the groups and turn that recording into a
community helper movie.
2) The children will have the opportunity to use digital cameras for the first time to
apply the use of technology to what they have learned in my presentation. The
children will walk around our community ad use the digital camera to take pictures of
community helpers or building where community helpers would be found. As a class
we would then talk about the images and what they were able to capture.
3) As our last follow up activity I will invite a local police officer to come into the
classroom and talk about his/her job. The children will be able to create a podcast
afterwards to describe what they were able to learn.
