Student profile
Name of student: Ben
Grade level: 6th Grade
Describe the students learning differences in the area of disability and/or giftedness:
(How does this student differ from typical classmates?)
This student came from a gifted/talented school down in Florida before his family moved
back up to New York. Coming from a gifted/talented school and being placed into a
public school could make a student like Ben regress, but I have not seen this with Ben. I
have watched him in all of his subject areas for a few days and I have noticed that he is
advanced in every subject, and doing well. Ben is being challenged by, participating in
writing a grade level newspaper and other activities is challenging math and reading Ben.
I have noticed that during math and science is when Ben really begins to come alive. He
is asking questions that sometimes catch his teachers off guard. I have witnessed him
asking his teacher questions that she was going to pose to the class next. He is very
articulate when he is asking the questions to his teachers, and sometimes his teachers do
not know how to respond to his questions or ask him to rephrase it again. Which has
made Ben appear frustrated (facial expression). I did notice that when Ben was taking a
mid-unit assessment he takes his time and uses advanced language. Even though he
could have easily finished before the other students he took his time and wrote extensive
information for each question that he completed. I have noticed that even though he is
advanced he gets along with all of his peers and is liked by everyone.
Based on observations and inventories, what are this students learning styles in the areas
of Multiple Intelligences, learning styles, preference for group or individual work, etc?
Based on observations and the MI inventory that Ben completed displayed high scores in
the intrapersonal and music categories of the MI inventory. He also scored high in the
visual and logical categories as well. I figured he would score high in the intrapersonal
section because he does seem reserved but liked by others and is willing to participate ingroup activities.
What I have noticed when Ben completes individual work is very detailed and he takes
his time. He double check his answers, and makes sure that it is has enough details to
support the question.
In-group work I saw that there was no individual who was completing the work.
Especially the group work in science was very interactive; everyone contributed with his
or her own thoughts and ideas.
