Causes of WW2

Assignment #1
1) In 1935, Mussolini of Italy planned to invade Abyssinia. The League made a small
amount of rules to keep Italy from attacking, but they did anyways. Britain and France
had even agreed to let Italy invade. As for Manchuria in 1931, it was invaded by Japan.
The League told them to leave but they refused to. The League failed to set up
sanctions and rules, so Japan stayed. There is more than 1 reason as to why the
League of Nations failed. America, one of the most powerful countries, decided not to
join as well as Britain and France werent strong enough on their own and the other
stronger countries felt like they didnt need it. Most countries at this point during the
depression were only worried about their own progress and power so they didnt pay
attention to the League. Since most of those reason led to its failure, soon enough
people didnt believe in it any longer. The League wasnt strong enough to make it
through the years, and had far too many corruptions.
2) In order for a war to be a dress rehearsal for another war, it would have to prove the
same outlook and settings. It must have either the same technology, type of warfare,
and the way it leads up to the other war. In this case, the Spanish Civil War does use
lots of modern technology such as tanks, strategic bombers, etc. It also represented
the fight between fascism and communism. Even though this is a civil war compared to
WW2, it involved other nations in it just like WW2 did; Nazi Germany and Soviet Union
were involved in both. So yes, I think that the Spanish Civil War was a lead up and
dress rehearsal for World War 2 by being a slightly smaller war which created great
tensions between nations.

3) Reasons for appeasement:

- Britains army was weak
- Didnt want another war
- People of Britain wanted peace
- Shelter and food over rearmament
- The Treaty had been unfair
- Chamberlain was clueless of Germanys actions
I think that the main reason for appeasement had a lot to do with the democracy of
Chamberlain and his unwillingness to force the Britains into and unwanted war. After
some time separated from the war, his people wanted peace and to be separated from
all the horrors of war. In this case, Chamberlain dealt with Hitler in a way to not
disturb him so that no other wars would break out. Another plausible reason as well
though, was the fact that Britain/Chamberlain really had no idea of Germanys

capabilities and what they were doing when no one was looking. Since they had no
idea, there was no need to war.
4) In the lightening war, known as the Blitzkrieg, Germans would advance tanks with
diving bombers, so the tactic involved tank use, soldiers on foot, and planes. This
specific tactic involved the use of fear and panic, making the defensive military very
scared. The Germans use of speed and agility lead the Blitzkrieg to be very successful
and unstoppable. The Germans had tons of Russian turf to practice and perfect on, so
they were experienced and confident as well. The Battle of Sedan and the invasion of
Poland involved the Blitzkrieg which proved it to be a very successful war tactic.
