Overview/Rationale
Students have just finished Night by Elie Wiesel and are now starting their essay. On Friday, I
gave them a choice of four possible topics. Over the weekend, they chose a topic and wrote an
informal journal response answer to the question. This will serve as data for my inquiry project. I
explained to students that we will not spend much time going over the 5 paragraph essay in
major detailrather, well work on strengthening the quality of their content for this essay so
they can improve as writers.
Enduring Understandings
The strength of an introduction will set the tone for the rest of the paper.
An introduction should provide a hook, background on the topic, and conclude with the thesis
statement.

Comment [FW1]: These look good for

freshmen. The first and third have different
wording from the other two prompts in that
they offer a more defined either/or option. It
should be interesting to see which style
prompt the ss gravitate to. It may yield
information relevant to your inquiry.
Comment [FW2]: I suggest composing an
EU that captures this element and posting it
on every LP during the writing workshops.

Goals/Objectives
Students will have a working thesis.
Students will write at least the bulk of their introduction.
Students will have a working understanding of where their essay is headed.
Materials
PowerPoint
Laptops for each student
Worksheet
Opener
15 min- Students will take out their homework, which was a free-write response to the essay
topic question. Theyll underline three main examples they used to support their answer. From
those examples, theyll create a working thesis statement.
Hand out worksheet. Brief presentation on good introductions.
Body of Lesson
About 30 min- Students will get to use the computers to type.
Closure
Several minutes to put laptops away, tell students where they should be (intro mostly done), tell
students well have laptops all week.

Comment [FW3]: The color coding looks

great.

Assessment
Ill be walking around to help students with their writing and answer any questions. Ill also try
to ensure everyone is moving at a reasonable pace.
Accommodations
Because some students have trouble simply following along on PowerPoints, I created a handout
that goes over the main details of each presentation so they can look at that as I speak.

Comment [FW4]: The display is hard to see

in that room. Good idea to make h/os.
