Choy, Susan P. Teachers' Working Conditions. Washington, DC: National Center for
Education Statistics, U.S. Dept. of Education, Office of Educational Research and
Improvement, 1996. Print.
This is a book by Susan Choy who is an American writer who writes a lot about
Americans Education system. The main point of this book is to lay out the working
conditions that is best fit for teachers to make the best learning environment available.
The author starts talking about how schools are a safe place that offers teachers a good
working environment in order for them to perform their best while teaching. Teacher
working conditions are also important for the students as well because it could possibly
impact how well a teacher teaches. The author points out that larger class sizes makes
learning and teaching difficult because of the noise level of the students and the teacher
not being able to control her students as well as he/she could in a smaller class size.
Overall, the author points out the best learning environment that is best for teachers.
This book talks about the ideal working conditions for teachers. I feel like the
author writes a lot about education, so she is credible. Although she is not a teacher, she
seems like she has some experience with teachers, maybe some of her friends could
possibly be teachers. This book is broken up into chapters that talk about the working
conditions of teachers including multiple charts and graphs. All in all, the author did a
decent job of how she presented the information.
Lasch, Christopher. The New Radicalism in America: (1889 - 1963) ; the Intellectual as a
Social Type. New York: Vintage, 1965. Print.
The author of this book is Christopher Lasch who is an American historian. Lasch
talks about the shift from American politics to reforms in education and culture. He talks
about how there was a dramatic change in Americans teachings. They were focused on
politics and issues about the government and then they dramatically shifted mind on
education, art, and culture of America. He talks about what all went into place when
focusing on education. The focus of Americans was no longer on politics, but on
education. Overall, the author focus of the changes that Americans made to education.
This is a book source with the author Christopher Lasch. I think that the author is
credible, because although this book is rather older it tells me about what teaching use to
be like in America. Today, teaching in America is the complete opposite. The book has
different chapters talking about the Radicalism in America. The book also contains
biographies from Jane Adams, Lincoln Steffens and other social reformers. Since this
book is old, it does not compare the education system back then to the education system
today which I wish it did.

Moorthy, Neelesh. "Low Teacher Pay Sets Back N.C. Education." The Duke Chronicle.
N.p., 01 Sept. 2014. Web. 30 Mar. 2015.
This is an article by Neelesh Moorthy, who is a graduate student at Duke
University who works at a High School. The main point of this article is that
many teachers are leaving North Carolina to go work at another state, because
North Carolinas teacher salary is extremely low. The article talks about how
North Carolina gets young teachers and then when these young teachers get
experience under their belt, they move to a different state to teach. In NC, it is one
of the states with the fewest amounts of teachers because of the low pay. Because
of this dilemma, there are not enough qualified teachers to teach the students who
are the future generation of America. Different educational groups in North
Carolina are trying to raise the pay. One point that the author makes is that the
state legislation wants to take away the raises for teachers with a masters degree
and also is going to take away the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program. The
author makes a point that without the NC Teaching Fellows Program it is shown
that there has been a decline in kids going to college or other educational
programs after high school. Moorthy points out that with teachers pay being low,
they are not putting as much effort into their teaching which in return can harm
the students who are the future generation of America.
This source is an article from The Chronicle. Since this particular student
is a Duke student, I think that he is credible because he has probably gone through
the public school system. He also works at a high school, which puts him around
teachers and he can see first hand what they are dealing with. The author is a
reliable source. The article states many facts along with being argumentative split
which are split into paragraphs.
Salaries of Teachers. Washington, DC: U.S. Dept. of Education, Office of Educational
Research and Improvement, Educational Resources Information Center:, 2000. Print.
This is a book by the Educational Resources Information Center who is
made up on teachers, librarians, education researchers, and policymakers to
inform the public about different teaching policies. Getting good teachers that are
credible to teach is a concern that Americans have today. As time goes on the
amount of full time teachers has gotten older and has gone from a younger age to
an older age. Also as time has gone on, the salary of teachers has dramatically
decreased and the salary keeps on getting lower and lower. This article also talks
about how the teachers salary between a bachelor degree vs a masters degree vs a
doctorate degree is not that much different it is basically the same. The author
makes an argument saying that the amount of young teachers being hired as time
has gone on in America. The author shows this by using statistics and points out
that in 1953, 53% of full time teachers were below the age of 35; but in 1993,
that percent dropped to 23%. The main point of this article is that with time,
fewer teachers are being hired and the benefits that teachers get has also

declined. The perfect life that a teacher once had years ago no longer applies to
new teachers.
This source is an article that gives facts about the salaries of teachers.
Since the Educational Resources Information Center wrote this article, so I
believe that this source is credible because they have reliable facts that are indeed
true. This particular article points out the fact that younger teachers are not getting
hired as much, so in Americas school system, we are left with the older teachers
that teach by rather old fashion methods. The structure of this article is broken
up into bullet points telling facts about teachers and their salaries. The author also
includes multiple graphs showing how teacher salary has declined over the years.
Bill Smoot. Conversations with Great Teachers. Bloomington: Indiana University
Press, 2010. Project MUSE. Web. 24 Mar. 2015. <https://muse.jhu.edu/>.
This is a book written my Bill Smoot who is a current teacher so he is
extremely credible. Every teacher does his or her job for one goal only pleasure.
This book is about Bill Smoot interviews teacher from Kindergarten to the 12th
grade. He interviews all different kinds of teachers going from art teachers to
English teachers and asks these different kinds of teachers questions like why do
they teach and what methods they use to reach their students. Smoots questions
make teachers really think about their goals and troubles as being a teacher. The
interview that Smoot is performing takes place at a dinner party with all the
different teachers gathering around. Everything that Smoot does in his life he
learned from being a teacher. Teachings has made him though thought provoking,
patient, and learn to deal with some of the most difficult situations. Overall, there
are numerous ways in which one teaches that can impact a teachers students and
which in return impacts that certain teacher.
I thought that this book had many good points that I can definitely use in
my paper. It is an article in which a teacher Mr. Bill Smoot interviews other
teachers at a dinner party about them being teachers. I think that the author is
credible because he himself is a teacher and understands teaching methods and the
struggles that teachers go through daily. The author breaks up the book into
different parts which includes teaching different types of students and also breaks
the book into teaching in a school room vs a college classroom. Moreover, the
author interviews the teachers and also tells a story.
