NAEYC Standard:
Standard 3. Observing, Documenting, and Assessing to Support Young Children and
Families.
Students prepared in early childhood degree programs to understand that child observation,
documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood
professionals. They know about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment.
They know about and use systematic observations, documentation, and other effective
assessment strategies in a responsible way, in partnership with families and other
professionals, to positively influence the development of every child. Key elements of
Standard 3b: Knowing about and using observation, documentation and other appropriate
assessment tools.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF EVIDENCE:
As a requirement for my early childhood Education curriculum, I enroll in the 16 weeks
Introduction to Early Childhood Education program. During my enrollment in the course I
was asked to complete several observation projects in different environment and with
different age groups, In addition I needed to document the finding of my reflection. During
class sessions three, I was required to conduct a Running Record which refers to conducting a
very detailed and objective report of what was observed and hear over a long period of time
and an Anecdotal Observation which refers to recording what was experienced and discovered
during a little period of time. I have chosen this assignment because I believed it reflex my
understanding of the NAEYC key element 3b. In addition to this assignment, my other
observation project also provided me with a better undertaking of this key element because I
had the opportunity to observe children from different age groups in different learning

environments that provided me with the opportunity to put in practice my observation skills.
In addition, demonstrate quality work because the documentation meets the required standard,
the information is detailed, objective and accurate.
DOCUMENTATION:
Running Record: observe two different children for 5-10 minutes. Record what you see
and hear.

Tina does not seem very interesting in painting now she seems distracted.
Why I believe this piece of work matches, demonstrates the NAEYC Standard. How
does this piece of work match with the expectation of the Standard?
The standard expectation is to demonstrate an understanding of the relevancy of conducting
child observations, documentation, and other forms of assessment to help enhance young
children's development. I believed this assignment matches and demonstrate the NAEYC
standard because the information is objective, accurate and free of bias, also my use of
language is simple and the report in detail the finding of this observation can help identify and
record any changes including the environment, preferences, developmental level and/or
behavior. In addition, observation can also help identify any necessary change to the
curriculum.
