Pablo Picasso's "Bouquet of Peace", Kindergarten

Picasso? What is Picassos Bouquet of Peace?

Lesson objective(s): SWBAT develop a basic


understanding of Pablo Picasso and who he was
(a famous Spanish painter). SWBAT recreate one of Pablo Picassos paintings:
Bouquet of Peace.
Assessment(s):

Observation
Final product of art project- students will recreate Pablo Picassos
Bouquet of Peace.

Materials: construction paper, tissue paper, and/or watercolors.


Prior knowledge: Students will have an understanding of basic colors and
shapes. Students will have a general understanding of plants.
Lesson beginning:
1. Students will watch a short movie on BRAINPOPJR about Pablo
Picasso. In this movie, Annie and Moby (the characters in
BRAINPOPJR) explore the life and work of artist Pablo Picasso.
Students will learn how he grew up and became an artist, and how

he experimented with different styles throughout his career. Annie
and Moby explore the different periods of Picasso's work, including
the Blue Period, Rose Period, and Cubist Period.
a. The teacher will pause throughout the movie to re-explain key
points and check if anyone has questions.
Instructional plan:
1. Watch movie on BRAINPOPJR as stated above ^
2. Next, the teacher will get students excited by explaining that they are
going to be artists like Pablo Picasso! The teacher will display a picture
of Pablo Picassos Bouquet of Peace and discuss his artwork.
3. Teachers dialogue & questions:
a. Explain that Picasso's print is variously titled "Bouquet of Peace,
Hands with Flowers," "Hands with Bouquet," "Flowers and
Hands," or any other variation on those words.
b. Define the words: PEACE, BOUQUET
c. Explain that Picasso created this painting as a peace
demonstration.
d. What is happening to the flowers? (Someone is holding or
giving the flowers away) Why? Are they saying, I love you, or
Im Sorry, or Lets be friends.
i. THINK & PARTNER SHARE: Why do people give flowers?
e. How many flowers are in this bouquet? Four large flowers
and small ones. What else is in the bouquet? Point to stems,
leaves, and grasses.
f. Whatmain shape is repeated in this flower bouquet?
(circles)
g. What makes these flowers look happy? The bright colors
i. THINK & PARTNER SHARE: Which flower did you notice
first?
h. Are the flowers realistic? The flowers are like daisies with a
solid center and petals radiating out. Most daises have more
petals, but they look like this. The colors of the red and yellow
flower and the red and orange flower are realistic. They are like
colored daisies. But, the blue and purple flower and the blue and
red flowers are not like any real flowers. Picasso used bright
colors to make them look happy, but he didnt try to make them
look realistic.
4. After the discussion, students will be sent back to their seats to
recreate Pablo Picassos Bouquet of Peace. Step-by-step instructions
will be given (whole group).

Differentiation: The following lesson addresses the three main cognitive
learning styles: visual, audio, and kinesthetic.

Visual/Kinesthetic- Students have an opportunity to use tissue


paper and/or watercolors to recreate the painting.
Audio- Students will listen to the movie on Pablo Picasso and
engage in a discussion afterwards.

Classroom Management:

Assigned seats on carpet.


Popsicle sticks used to randomize student participation.
Color chart (traffic light system) - students start the day
on green and are asked to change their color if they
demonstrate disruptive behavior or do not follow directions.
Treasure Chest Students that display commendable/excellent
behavior during the day can visit the treasure chest at the end of
the day.
Classroom language: Catch a bubble when students are
talking over teacher and/or students. Active listening, Spider
webs, Legs crossed apple sauce. Transitions: Clap (5x)

Closure: The students will recreate Pablo Picassos Bouquet of Peace. The
teacher will summarize what they have done and what they have learned.
