Dear Professor Adam Padgett,

Throughout my semester in UWRT 1102 I have made great strides and improvements to
my writing. Specifically highlighted throughout this portfolio, my writing is generally pretty
sound but I do struggle in areas and I also have so weak spots that could use some improvement.
Highlighted in my research paper, I struggle with transitions and opening sentences /
paragraphs. I have always had trouble starting an essay or a sentence ever since I was a young
kid in grade school. However, I have improved recently throughout my UWRT career here at
UNCC. Although I am still not quite where I want to be, I am a lot better than I was when I got
here as a freshman last August. In my recent experiences with my own writing I have discovered
things about my writing that I never knew. For example, I noticed that I have a tendency to write
run-on sentences a lot and I will not use a colon on a period to separate a run-on sentence. On the
other hand, I prevail in things such as explanations and descriptive wording in my writing. I have
always liked using big words (and actually knowing what they mean) to describe things and
making myself sound smart. The work included in this portfolio represent my best work and
effort in terms of writing and research. Most of the time I enjoy writing papers and arguing a
point, especially when I get to choose the topic myself. One thing that I really enjoyed about
UWRT 1102 was the ability to choose our own research topics. Being able to choose my own
topic enabled me to really engage myself in my topic and my research which enabled me to put
forth my best effort. Most of the artifacts included in my portfolio are in reference to the final
research paper. The reason I choose to keep it mostly research paper related is because it shows
how I went about conducting my research and going from my proposal to my final paper. I
attempted to follow the writing process that I was taught throughout high school as much as

possible in order to keep all of my thoughts and ideas organized in a manner that was easy to
follow. After reviewing my performance and accomplishments throughout my UWRT career at
UNCC I have satisfied my intentions. I received a high A in UWRT 1101 and I am anticipating
an A in UWRT 1102 as well. My writing has definitely benefited from both of these classes
especially 1102 due to the research paper. As much as most students hate research in general, and
a research paper, this one was very interesting. I was given the opportunity to research a topic
that I had a personal connection and interest with which made it that much more engaging. I fully
enjoyed writing the research paper and this class as a whole.
Hopefully this e-portfolio will represent my writing and UWRT career, more importantly
1102, in a positive way. I have learned a lot about my writing and myself throughout this course
and I have honestly enjoyed it. I look forward to taking more writing classes before I graduate
that will challenge me even more.
Sincerely,
Mason C. Hudson
