Practicum Experience
Entering my student teacher experience in the last semester of school year, I
had to quickly become familiar with NAEYC standards and the schools
curriculum. To do this I observed my mentor teachers instructional time with the
children and gained as much information as I could about the childrens
educational standing by developing a professional relationship with the my mentor
teacher and the children. As part of my practicum experience, I decided to focus
on the areas that I wanted to continue my learning, which are using innovation and
motion to a better teach the children.
I learned much from my practicum courses, but I think the real learning is
truly applying that knowledge and creating authentic activity plans that work for
all children that are age appropriate. Also I set goals; the goals reflect the school
goals and vision. However, I learned setting goals alone may not fulfill the
motivation needs of each teacher without specific feedback from the director and
recognizing good work and effort when deserved. I agree that directors need to be
supportive instructional leaders, but they also need to set high expectations and
follow-through as well. In schools where resources and training are abundant but
little or no expectations exist, little change occurs. I believe collaboration and
communication is the key to running a successful school.

This sounds harsh, but I believe students deserve the best and if there is an
individual who is not right for the job, then they should leave the profession.
My over all experience was an eye opener to how I would respond and react
to stressful situation such as, dissatisfied parent. As teachers we must be informal
as well as professional. Keeping parent informed and involved will insure quality
education for the child. Having both teachers and parents (caregivers) on the same
page, ensure success.
In this practicum experience I learned how important time is. I was not
aware of how time can be essential to a successful program. When doing activities
you as well as the children are so engaged in the project and conversation you
forget about the time, but if you dont follow a schedule you will have chaos in
your classroom.
In Conclusion, the practicum program challenged me with newfound
learning in an exciting environment. I am so pleased I learned new concepts and
principles about leadership. Amazingly, I retained the information better because
the time involved practical work. I am grateful for the experience because I was
introduced to skills applicable to my profession. As I reflect on the semester
learning, I could not be more excited about what is to come next.
