Student Learning Outcomes
INTRODUCTION:
This semester this class has been very advantageous, in all sense of the word. With the various
assignments I have been influenced to think deeper, work intensely, and write fervently. The
writing assignments I had were assorted in purpose and assisted me in furthering my knowledge
of written communication. My abilities as a writer have improved exponentially in the context of
the Student Learning Outcomes or SLOs. With the SLOs guidance I was able to mature as a
writer and better my knowledge of the written word.
SLO A:
In regards to SLO A I have improved with rhetorical situation and genre by being able to review
various documents and literature and interpret their significance and understand its usage. I have
come to distinguish that different documents are used to communicate to a variety of audiences.
Also, different mediums have specific purposes for communication. An example of SLO A is
what I worked on in sequence 3 by first writing the genre memo and then transforming it into my
proposal. In this way I was able to take the same information and present it in different writing
mediums. Transcending thoughts and words with different intentions can allow different forms of
interpretation, which made me consider my words and expressions carefully. With this
assignment I was able to communicate the same idea to different rhetorical audience each with a
specific purpose and expectation. I believe this assignment has made me considered how
communicating in different forms to different people will benefit me in my nursing career. In the

medical field communication is essential when having an impact on an individuals health and
well being. Communication between medical professionals is stressed because if there are errors
this could be a horrendous experience for a patient. Along with that I believe professional
communication between colleagues can only help an individual be respected in their field and as
a person. Using appropriate language will allow others to understand that I am serious about my
work and can only project me further into the nursing field.
SLO F:
For SLO F I would have to say that I have improved and developed as a writer over the semester.
The assignments I worked on allowed me to create various genres while using several tools and
through this gave me the ability to let me understand how to approach the different assignments
in an innovative manner. Evidence of my improvement is recognizable in sequence 2 with my
research of pornography and its impact on adolescents. This assignment was challenging because
I had to do extensive research into this narrow topic. I had to integrate this information by being
able to judge if a source is credible and ethically cite it. However, I was able to consider new
information and make informed decision and I even changed my mind on certain matters because
I saw other peoples outlook on collective issues. I was able to argue my opinion and holdup my
belief that I have about this issue. I think my improvement has been not so much in the sense of
good writing but rather expressing myself as an individual with thoughts that I want to be heard.
I reflect on the skills Ive acquired which will benefit me outside of the classroom and I know it
will help me in the nursing field but I think it will help me go further as an individual writer.
SLO C:
For SLO C I believe making progress in this area is standard mostly because I feel that an
individual could not have taken this course and passed without advancement in this area. Be that

as it may I think what really boosted myself in this area was the peer reviews done in class. I
composed numerous rough drafts that were assessed, revised, edited by classmates proofreading
my work. Incorporating their feedback into my work has strengthened my approach to writing
and thinking critically about my viewpoints and ideas. I also think using multiple technologies
impacted my writing by having access to books, newspaper articles, videos, and power points to
get our ideas across to classmates. I furthered my understanding of what topics I was writing
about. The process really confronted me to get out of my comfort zone by being challenged by
writing different papers and seeing other peoples views on certain issues. Along with that I think
bring laptops to class and being able to peer review with that method made it easier to tackle the
assignments by making it easier and quicker to finalize a document. I especially liked using
Google docs mainly because I was a simpler way to get feed back and make quick changes.
Writing is a process and using technology and electronic resources made the creative process
easier and faster. This product from SLO C can help me in my nursing career by be being able to
adapt to advances in technology and forming professional documents. I think in the long term I
will be an asset to any medical facility I work for because I am adaptable to changing scenarios.
SLO D & E:
For SLO D I think this the SLO I struggled with the most. Improving my fluency in the dialect of
Standard Written American English has always been a struggle for me because I tend to let my
writing have a casual conversation-like style. Writing properly does not come naturally to me
and I have to concentrate very hard to make sure my writing is appropriate. I think with all the
proofreading we had done in class helped me improve my writing to perfect my grammar for less
confusion. For SLO E it is the opposite of SLO D because while SLO D expresses concern for
grammatical correctness SLO E emphasizes exactness of peoples various registers, or their

particular forms of speech. For example, if I quote someone and they have an accent or use
improper grammar I must be honest and quote them exactly. Along with that I must not pass
judgment on them for their form of speech because communication between people is varied. I
think I have already developed this skill of incorporating languages and dialects because it is
natural for me to write in my unintentional casual style of writing. The reason I wrote about these
two SLOs together is because even though they are opposite these SLOs compliment each
other. An instance of using these SLOs would be for an interview. I consider my awareness of
the differentiation and similarity between these two SLOs to be evidence of my understanding
of them and therefore I have gained the required growth for these two SLOs. I believe this
outcome will help me be more aware of people and their background. A scenario I can think of is
myself working as a nurse and being able to make connections with people, which I think can
benefit their health but their comfort during a medical ailment. Understanding how people
communicate can make a world of difference and I think it begins with understanding that
communication can vary from person to person.
CONCLUSION:
This semester has been a period of growth for my writing skills. I have learned a significant
amount of knowledge for writing and English. With the guidance of the Student Learning
Outcomes I think I am not only a better writer but a knowledgeable individual, Now that I am
equipped with these skills Ive acquired over the semester I can only flourish in my future
nursing career.
