A and B, 16th Notes

Behavioral Objectives
Students will be able to successfully clap and say the rhythms on the board at faster tempos as well as
successfully recognize that A and B are different in Shoo, Fly.

Materials
Speakers and Metronome
Rhythm Examples

Procedure
1. Start class with clapping/tapping speeds that get faster and faster
2. Have students use the rhythm sheets on the board and make their own rhythms
-No words
3. Once the students become comfortable, a metronome will be used to move faster and faster with
each new rhythm.
-Students make all the rhythms
-Give every student a try
4. Play Shoo Fly on the IPod
-Have students listen for how many different sections there are
-Review A and B
-Talk about expanding (ABA, ABBA, ABB)

5. Play the separate sections and ask if students here a difference?


-Ask students to stand when they hear the A section
-Try with B as well if necessary
6. See if we can figure out the ABA Form
7. Create different moving activities for A and B
-Student suggestions
-Break into 2 groups for extension
8. End class with Old Brass Wagon song and game

Assessment
Students will be assessed based on their ability to adapt their clapping/saying of rhythms on the board
as the tempo is increased. Students will also be able to successfully recognize that Shoo Fly has the
musical formation of ABA.
