TIGER P.R.I.D.E
REFLECTION JOURNAL
WEEK 2: FEBRUARY 18TH 2015
Overview
Wednesday February 18th was our second week in tiger pride and my second
teach with the students. The unit for this week was football skills, on Wednesday, I
taught the 20 4th grade tiger pride students a lesson on punting and kicking a football. For
this lesson I needed 40 dome cones, 10 jerseys, 10 footballs and a large open space to
allow the students to kick the ball. The lesson began with a game of mountains and
valleys which progressing into partner kicking. The first task the students were involved
in providing feedback to their partners when they kicked. The second task was when the
two partners would try to kick the ball and play catch with their partner. During the
recording of my lesson, the microphone died cutting out the audio for a large portion of
this lesson.
Student Learning Objectives
My Student Learning Objectives were as follows: Psychomotor: Students will be able to
properly perform the cues of the skill for punting a football 7 out of 10 times. For
Cognitive: Students will be able to explain the 4 cues of the skill for punting with 100
percent accuracy. For Affective (A): Students will be able to support each other through
positive encouragement every other kick, and for H-R Fitness (H): Students will be
engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity for 50 percent of the lesson. My
evaluation teams data shows me that I just barley made it over 50 percent mvpa but was
able to achieve my objective. In the conclusion, the students were able to tell me the cues

of the skill and during the activity students would attempt to perform all the cues. A few
students would benefit from more practice to get more comfortable with the skill. I felt
that I address all of my student learning out comes during my activities however I feel
that I can continue to try and increase my health related fitness which will improve their
psychomotor objectives.
Quality Learning Environment
This week I felt that my lesson did a better job at achieving the 4 criteria for a
learning experience. The students were practicing for long periods of times in groups of
two both maximizing time and allow for students to improve their motor skills. This was
their first time kick a football, thus the activity was designed to be age and skill
appropriate beginning with stationary kicking practicing the skill to trying to kick it to a
partner. For this lesson, I spent 9.25 minutes in management, 15.25 minutes in activity
and 6.5 minutes in instruction. I was able to use attention getter for this lesson to try and
improve my instructions, but I need to be stricter with my strikes and try and limit the
management time even more to increase activity time. The two activities for this lesson
allowed the students to practice kicking without focusing on a target and just focusing on
the skill to the second activity where students could try and work on their target practice
when it comes to punting. This allowed a smooth progression for the development of
their punting skills.

Strengths & Weaknesses

This weeks movement seemed to be a bit less than last weeks movements. I was
able to stay on the outside the class and walk around to talk to most of the students and

Casey Fleming
provide descriptive feedback. However I noticed in the video that I was beginning to say
by the same few groups for a majority of the time when I wasnt moving around. When I
was walking around a great deal of my feedback was to individuals to improve their skill
development.
During my introduction, I felt my instructions were very clear and quick. I gave
them visual aids and told them the rules to the game. For the kicking activity I provided
the cots: hold, step, drop, swing and throughout the lesson was reminding the students. I
Found that I was giving a lot of individual feedback to students for stepping with the
wrong foot. I also felt that I should have instructed students to kick with their toes
pointed. I found myself getting distracted by disruptive students during my lesson when I
would give instructions. I also provided many demonstrations for the students to help
them understand the skill. I used whole and part as well as using a student demonstration
to help assist with the students learning. The students were always facing me during
instruction but sometimes the footballs were in the students hands so it cause them to get
distracted easily. I felt that my demonstrations were all clear, understandable and helped
assist my teach, however I feel that I can still improve my instruction during my
demonstrations and try to simply them even further.
I preset up the equipment for the poly spots and cones for the instant activity and
kicking task, which helped in my future transition. One aspect that cause my
management time to go up was the fact that I did not pre set out the footballs so I had to
individually hand them out to each group cause time to be wasted. This is definitely a
transitional areas in which I could improve for my next lesson. I felt that I did a slightly
better job this week with controlling the disruptive students. I began to call them out by

Casey Fleming
name this week for not doing the behavior I asked and I also used clapping attention
getters to try and gain the students attention, which took a while, but it helped. A few
students had to be sat out during the kicking activity for throwing the football and not
doing what the rest of the students were doing. Once they were allowed back into
activity they participated fully. This week I tried to make competitions out of the games
to help encourage the students and make the physical activity fun for them.
This week I would say that 3 of my skills was that I made my instructions shorter
and easier to follow, I provided easy cues for the students to remember, and I provided
them with a good amount of practice time to advance their kicking skills. I feel that I can
try and make sure that all students are on task and take more control of the class room. I
also need to move a little more but need to make sure not to turn my back to the students
and maybe trying to incorporate some pinpointing where I would have a successful
student demonstrate for the rest of the class.
Recommendations for next Session
Next week I would continue to recommend focusing on improving transitions,
equipment placement and organization during lessons. The quicker I can move from
activity to activity, the more practice I will allow for the students, which will improve the
quality of the lesson. I also feel that I can try to use a different attention getter that may
better attain their attention.
