Puyallup School District

Teacher Laptop Initiative

Background
Since 2004, the Puyallup School District provides each
teacher with a district laptop to support the goal of improving
student learning and achievement for the students they serve.
This important technology tool allows each teacher to prepare
lessons, access online learning resources and tools, deliver instruction, assess students learning, and
communicate with students and parents. Beginning in 2010, the school district provided needed upgrades
and enhancements to those laptops with Operation Life Support. Some laptops were replaced 2012;
however, the lifespan of the remaining teacher laptops is nearing an end. With this need, we are
proposing the Teacher Laptop Initiative beginning in the spring of 2014 to create a sustainable approach
to providing teachers with a new laptop on a three-year cycle.
Funding for this initiative is available from the prudent management of existing budgets and by no means
associated with the current levies.

Rationale
Teachers must be able to use their laptop to perform the following essential duties:

Write dynamic lesson plans utilizing technology within their lesson to meet the diverse learning
needs of their students (Danielson Domain 1-Planning and Preparation)
Assess student learning using district-sponsored software and websites to determine immediate
instructional steps with students, and be able to access student assessment results from our new
student assessment database, Performance PLUS. (Danielson Domain 1-Planning and
Preparation, and Domain 2-Instruction)
Communicate with students and parents regarding student performance and records. (Domain 4Professional Responsibilities)
Maintain thorough teaching and student records electronically (Domain 4-Professional
Responsibilities).

In order to lead this work with students, our teachers need to have a teacher laptop able to perform based
upon operating standards no older than three years old. This initiative will enable our teachers to have a
device which meets that standard.
Implementation
Communication to stakeholders is a high priority for this project and as such informing the Board of
Directors, our superintendent, central office administrators, building administrators, and teachers is our
first step. Once our board and superintendent are provided details of the project, communications to
central office and building administrators will take place. Informing PEA is the next step prior to sending
out a teacher survey which asks for input from our teacher to help us get the message out about the project
and also acquire certain implementation steps
