Overall heat transfer coefficient in the flat plate thermosyphon

When operating below its maximum overall rate of heat transfer , Qmax , the
performance of a two phase closed thermosyphon can be characterized by the overall
thermal resistance , z. the actual overall rate of heat transfer , Q , and the effective
difference between the heat source and the heat sink , t are related by :
Q = t/z
Where t = t evap)av-t cond)av
The equivalent thermal resistance of the flat plate thermosyphon must be concluded
from the idealized network of thermal resistance z1 to z10 as shown in Fig. (5-1)
Z1 and z9 : the thermal resistances between the heat source and the evaporator
external surface , and between the condenser surface and the heat sink respectively.
For flat plate thermosyphon:

Z2 and z8: are defined as the thermal resistances across the thickness of the container
wall in the evaporator and the condenser respectively. For flat plate thermosyphon

R3 and r7: the thermal resistance of the boiling and condensing fluid in the
thermosyphon . for the circular flat plate thermosyphon, these internal resistance may
be neglected
Z4 and z6: the thermal resistance that occur at the vapor liquid interface in the
evaporator and the condenser respectively. In order to sustain a finite evaporation or
condensation rate , a temperature difference must exist between the liquid and the
vapor at their interface. For flat plate thermosyphon , these are always neglected,
being small

Z5: is defined as the effective thermal resistance due to the pressure drop of the vapor
For flat plate thermosyphon, the overall pressure loss in the vapor phase between the
evaporator, and the condenser were the vapor in saturation equilibrium with the
liquid, there is corresponding temperature difference in the vapor. This temperature
difference give rise to the thermal resistance z5, but for this case is small enough to be
set equal to zero.

Z10: the axial thermal resistance of the container wall as well as conducting heat
through its thickness , the wall conducts heat axially . this resistance is given for flat
plate thermosyphon by:

In order to compute the overall heat transfer coefficient in the circular flat plate
thermosyphon , temperature distribution on both the evaporator and condensing plate
surfaces are measured at the investigated operating temperature (40c to 8oc)
