“RIT-RITEMUN KAYONG,

anos to come up with festival names that simply captures their culinary
Trust the
heritage. THREE places are holding theirs this week:
(1) Dinengdeng Festival of Agoo, La Union. (2) Aramang Festival of Appari, Cagayan
They seem to have this “in-your-face” attempt to whet visitor's appetite — as can be further
reflected by the other towns and cities, as can be reflected in the Pinakbet Festival of Ilocos Sur
(provincial fest); the DINAKLISAN FESTIVAL of Currimao (“panagdaklis” they meaning
panagkalap iti daklis fish); the LONGGANISA Festival of Vigan; the street food invitation of Batac
with their EMPANADA Fest; the exotic food connotations of the KURARAPNIT Fest of Pagudpud.
They can also afford to go un-apologetic, like the “ABAKO Festival of Candon, or the spotlight
given to BASI (yes, arak) by the people of Piddig. They would also go funny, like giving a subtitle
to their festival, like the people of Sarrat, who call their fiesta “RIT-RITEMUN KAYONG.”
Natangsit, naturay da in their selection of festival names. While most are focused on a single
treasured commodity, like the GARLIC Festival of Pinili, others would go ALL-ENCOMPASSING.
Laoagefios hit it smack in the middle with their sub-festival named as DULANG FESTIVAL.
Now, Dulang refers to a food tray, or the dining table itself. Nagtamtamaanen ngay ti
dadduma dita? Adda aminen nga naka-dasar idiay lamisaan.
And many others down the line. What caught my attention, however, is the THIRD festival
featured in Unang Hirit today (1 only named the first two above). “Dulang” is nothing compared
to this festival which really says it all. AND THE PLACE? It's not in the two Ilocos provinces.
Not in La Union or Eastern Pangasinan or Upper Cagayan.
