The Mind Game to Success
Dossier Introduction
For many years, there has been an ongoing discussion on what traits are most
valued in order to run a successful business. Joe Bower and Joanne Ciulla have stated that
a business is best run when the leader is strict and his employees fear him. Another
discussion has stated that when employees dont fear but rather love the manager, that it
leads to a prosperous business. This argument has been ongoing for many years and since
entrepreneurship is a big route many individuals are taking today in age, I want to study
what is needed in order to succeed. So now the question is if whether these leadership
qualities are inherited, learned, or a balance of the two.
Discussions have proven time and time again that in the matter of only minutes of
talking to someone, you can tell how successful they will be. The origin of these specific
traits is unknown to mankind. Some people are simply just more successful than others
whether that be motivation or actual skill. After reading this I want to see what is it that
these individuals study in order to figure out how people become successful. Being that
this is a very broad topic, various types of people naturally split it up into different
perspectives. The first is that characteristics that people who are successful were born
with these traits. Being that the characteristics such as patience, motivation, and
intelligence are typically traits that humans are born with in their personality. Also, often
times the manager of a business leaves it to his son or family member, because they too
have these specific characteristics and morals that stay within a family. The second
perspective is that the characteristics are learned. For example, now a day we hear an
abundance of stories about how people struggle their whole life and then become

millionaires from working hard and building their way up in life. This would be an
example of success being learned. Throughout the persons life they went through
specific experiences that altered their personality and will power for the better. The third
and final perspective is that two people with different sets of strengths come together to
form a partnership, making them stronger than ever. Often time people will try to run a
business by themselves and do well in some areas but lack in others. Businesses with
partnerships fix this problem by working as a team. They lean on each other and depend
on each other, but at the same time, work as equals. This co-dependent partnership
celebrates the variety of people there are in this world and brings everyones strengths
and weaknesses together for the better.
All of the sources that I used and cited in this dossier contribute to my research in
a positive way. I did not use just only peer-reviewed journal articles and websites, but
also videos of successful people who talk about this topic. Researchers such as White,
Bower, and Ciulla are all well respected who have PHDs in areas such as economics and
business. They also make my argument well rounded and nonbiased due to their logos
and ethos they provide in their research. On one hand, Joe Bower and Joanne Ciulla argue
the side of the argument that defends that people are born with these traits, while on the
other hand Aliene Linwood and Wendy Smith support the idea that people learn the
things necessary to succeed in life. All of their information is strictly research based and
portrayed through an ethical and humane way of coming to a conclusion to this topic that
is applicable to all Americans, even if they are not businessmen and women. Traits of
success can be utilized anywhere outside of the business world, so it is important to know
where they come from.

Are leadership qualities obtained or heritable traits?

Should leadership be power held with fear in your employees?

Kinds of research:
Most of my research is from books found on the UCF Database and a
few books I know from background knowledge that have to do with
leadership. The second half of my information will be coming from the Internet. As I
get closer to my final paper though I might expand my references and maybe speak to a
professional businessman at a conference or so for more person on person research.

Annotated Bibliography
Bower, Joe. Youtube. The Dearth of Leadership 23 April 2012. 12 February
2015<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHGKGZExg7M>.

This video supplies data on what characteristics are needed to run a successful
business and what characteristics cant be learned. The whole discussion is by a
college professor named Joe Bower who has a master in business managemententrepreneurship. He discusses the reason his two first businesses failed and then
how he was able to make his third business prosper after receiving help from a
friend who had the right traits needed to run a business. This also demonstrates that
running a business with two people is not bad because you make up for the qualities
one of you are weak on. Reliable source because it comes from an accredited
business teacher.
Bchler, Peter, et al. "Leadership Characteristics And Business Management In Modern
Academic Surgery." Langenbeck's Archives Of Surgery / Deutsche Gesellschaft Fr
Chirurgie 391.2 (2006): 149-156. MEDLINE. Web. 1 Mar. 2015.

I decided to use this article so I can compare different ways of running different
businesses. While some traits are needed for every business, some traits are
specific dependent on what task you want your business to perform. Therefore in
this source, Dr. Bchler, Peter discusses how running a medical business is not easy and
is different because you need different traits to keep this business up and running. This
article was published by the NCIB which is a highly accredited government website that
reviews all the works that are posted to make sure the work is accurate.

Ciulla, Joanne B. "The Importance of Leadership in Shaping Business Values ." Long Range
Planning 32.2 (1999): 166-172.

This online article by Joanne B. Ciulla who holds the Coston Family Chair in
Leadership and Ethics at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, University of
Richmond. In this article she speaks about values that leaders should have and
traits that make a business prosper. Some individuals believe that if you have
values your good to go to run a business but not all values are good values. Some
values can bring businesses down so this is why she speaks about values that
should be valued and polished to improve your business and which values should
be thrown out. Reliable source it was approved by many universities and
published on a high respected online article Long Range Planning.

Management Teams On Venture Performance: Aligning Founding Team Composition
With Innovation Strategy And Commercialization Environment." Strategic Management
Journal 35.12 (2014): 1798-1817. Business Source Premier. Web. 1 Mar. 2015.

This source is one of my favorites because a team of individuals who all work in
top qualified companies wrote it. They were put together and there was a study
done demonstrating the effects a team can have when running a company. By
every individual writing down their ideas and then taking the best ideas and
putting them together they were able to start up a business of their own. This not
only demonstrates the positive affects of working with a group of individuals but
it also portrays the trait of humility which is necessary for a business because
even though you might have great ideas, opening up and listening to other great
ideas will help your business blossom. Published by the credible and highly
affiliated with business journal Business Source Premier making the work
credible.
Linwood, Aliene S., and Carol A. Petrucelli. Leadership Skills For Entrepreneurs. Salt Lake City,
Utah: Bedside Books, 2001. eBook Collection (EBSCOhost). Web. 1 Mar. 2015.
This e-book was written by two doctors who have studied entrepreneurs leader and
discussed important factors of being an entrepreneur. The three main factors they focus
on is teaching how to delegating authority, listening to employees, and even explaining
their vision clearly. These three simple qualities can make a huge difference in starting a
business and if you dont have that planned before you start a business they state you are
preparing for failure and bankruptcy. This e-book was peer reviewed before it was
allowed published, which makes it master the ethos portion of this text. The doctors
involved in the writing are highly credible for all their works and studies done.

Business Source Premier. Web. 1 Mar. 2015.
This academic journal written by graduated students who received P.H.D.s from
Harvards business school discuss all the things you have to look at when running your
business. The issue with many managers when they start a business is that they only
focus on demands they have. Instead of doing this, when running a business you have to
be able to please everyones demand ranging from you the manager, your employees, the
media, and your customers. In this journal they talk about how to address all these
demands in order to run a successful business where everyones demands are met. Source
was peer reviewed by professors with masters in business at Harvard, making it credible
and a reliable source.
