Visual and Performing Arts Reflection

The visual and performing arts are a portion part of a comprehensive curriculum and are
essential for learning in the 21st century. All California students deserve quality arts learning in
dance, music, theater, and visual/media art as part of the core curriculum. To be an effective
teacher in visual and performing arts I must have knowledge about the artistic and aesthetic
development of my students, and respect the students self-expressions. In the framework,
teachers should include activities in the arts that relate to the interest of the students, as well as,
balance students- initiated and teacher-directed activities. In addition, teacher should help
students understand the connections to literature about the arts and artists that include, stories,
biographies, and histories of dance, music theatre, and the visual arts.
In my Kin 447, KIN 425 and THE 100, I learned how to provide essentials first steps for
students to develop their ability to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and understanding of
art. Through these classes I gain knowledge and skills needed to express ideas creatively in
verbal and nonverbal ways. In my THE 100 class, I learned how important it is to read about the
artists and the history of art and apply it to the core curriculum in the classroom. In addition, I
learned how to talk, read and write about all arts and visual performance and apply it to a
curriculum and instruction.
My artifact, a lesson plan from KIN 447 Dance in Elementary School, shows my
knowledge on how to instruct a dance lesson for a kindergarten class. The lesson plan requires
me to teach students how to move through space and respond to their teachers instructions by
listening. It also, allows me to talk about how the dances are the same or different by using terms

as, faster or slower. Students will be able to learn to distinguish between everyday movements
and dance movements. In addition, the lesson plans shows my time management skills, planning
and administering the lesson in a timely manner. I look forward in teaching new and creative
lessons for my students in all content area of arts, and visual performance.
