    energyconversiononourplanet.Humanshaveunderstoodthissincethebeginningsof
    civilizationthesungodiscentraltothemythologyofmanycultures.Peoplehavespentmany
    centuriesresearchingtheSunandtheimpactithasonthissmallblueplanet,andtheyhavefound
    outmanythings.However,therearestillthingslefttolearn,especiallyintermsharnessingthe
    Sunsenergyforourownuse.
    TheSunisastar.Thismeansthatitgeneratesitsenergythroughacertainprocesscalled
    nuclearfusion.Thisiswherefouratomsofhydrogenarefusedtogetherintooneheliumnucleus
    underimmenseforce(Physics.fsu).Thiscreatesenergysince,accordingtoEinsteinsfamous
    theory,masscanbecomeenergyunderspecificcircumstances.Theenergyreleasedfromthis
    fusionisconvertedintoelectromagneticandthermalenergyintheformoflightandheat,
    respectively.ThisishowwereceivetheSunsenergyonEarthitheatsuptheplanetssurface
    andgivesuslightduringtheday.WithouttheSunslightandwithoutnuclearfusionthe
    Earthwouldbeabarrenplanetwithabsolutelynolife
    ThefactthattheSunultimatelypowerstheEarthleadstoonequestion:whenwillit
    begintopowerhumansociety?WehavebeenindirectlyutilizingtheSunsenergythroughfossil
    fuelsforgenerations,sincefossilfuelsareleftoverfromancientplantmaterial.Theseplants,of
    course,grewwiththeuseofsunlight.However,havinggonethroughsomanydifferent
    conversionsonitswayintotheoilwell,thissolarenergyisfarfromoptimal.Humankinds

    endgoalinenergyproductionshouldmostlikelybedirectharvestationfromtheSun,sincethis
    wouldtechnicallybemostefficient.Manyscientistshavefiguredthisaswell,andhavebeen
    workingonwaystoreachthisgoal.
    Thisiswherewestarttogetintosolarenergy.Thefirsttimethatpeoplestarted
    generatingelectricityfromsolarenergywasinthe19thcentury,withAugustinMouchotssolar
    engine(LandArtGenerator).Originallyamathteacher,startedexperimentingwithsolarenergy,
    andin1878producedamachinethatcouldmakeicewithsolarpower.Later,AmericanCharles
    Frittsinventedthefirstsolarcellin1883,usingathinsheetofgoldtocoatselenium(PV
    Lighthouse.org).Justlikeearlysteamengines,theefficiencyofthissolarcellwasverylow
    around2%.However,itwasthefirststepindirectlyharnessingtheSunsraystocreateelectric
    power.
    Therehassincebeenmanyadvancesintermsofsolarpower.Today,therearebeingused
    forthingssuchascalculators,cars,andevensatellites.Also,manyhomesarefittedwithsolar
    panelsontherooforasidethehouse,andsomeevengetalloftheirenergyfromtheSun.While
    muchprogressisbeingmade,solarpowerhasyettobecomealeadingsourceofelectricenergy
    tomostpeople.However,itisonitswayupand,eventually,theSunwillprobablybecomethe
    numberonesourceofenergy.
