Course: EDUC 101: Introduction to Teaching

Brief Description: This is my personal philosophy of education. This details my views of what I
think of education and roles or educator and student.

Rationale:
I believe that recognizing the differences that I have in myself and the role I believe I have in my
classroom I can help my students achieve high standards. I also believe that recognizing that
each student is different and offers something unique and that no child will learn the same way.
There is no one fit style that is going to work in my classroom. It will take all the learning
styles to make the classroom and all my students succeed in their academic careers. I believe that
recognizing this in my philosophy of education statement helps me make a brighter future for my
classroom.

Philosophy of Education

I believe the purpose in education is to help children or adolescents are able to think on
their own. In a piece entitled The Purpose of Education by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. he is
quoted saying, Education must train one for quick, resolute, and effective, thinking. To think
incisively and to think for ones self is very difficult. (Jr., 1947) I firmly believe if children
and adolescents are not taught to think on their own then they just become robots. How then do
new ideas and inventions come about? How do new medicines and discoveries get discovered
if children are not taught to think on their own? My role as an educator is for the children that I
teach to make learning personal for each child. In her text book Teach Janice Koch quotes
President Bill Clinton in 1998 saying Every child needs- and deserves- dedicated, outstanding
teachers who know their subject matter, are effectively trained and know how to teach to high
standards and to make learning come alive for students. (Koch, 2014) I will be that teacher that
has the class that cannot wait to see what happens in school that day because learning is fun.
When learning is fun the child cannot wait to see what is next.
I believe the role of the student is to be active in the classroom. This can be done by
participation and contribution. A student can ask questions to the teacher. The can answer a
question that was given. The student can express his or her own thoughts on a certain topic or
idea. Another role of the student is that in my classroom would be thinking figuring out things
in a situation that they are fully interested in. For example, if he or she wanted the new video
game that is $60 but have $40 how he or she can earn the other $20. The students role in my
classroom is also how well can he or she follow instructions once they are given. Can he or she
be a leader when needed or do a job when needed? I will reach the wide diversity of children in
my classroom by getting to know each of the children in my classroom. If I do not understand
something about their life I will ask their parents. I may have a multi-culture day to celebrate all
walks of life. My goals for my students are to try the best that they can while having fun.
I believe all children learn differently. I will use this belief in my classroom to not use
just one way of learning. For example when I am teaching math I can put the problem on the
board for visual learners, have them write it down, say it out loud, and for the hands on learners
have a manipulative to work out the problem. This will help classroom management so
students will not be frustrated everyone is learning in their style someway. For students and
those who are having test anxiety I will find a way to calm them down. I will work with their
parents to find the best solutions so the student has fantastic results. I will reflect on my
practices on how my students are reacting to my teaching and the grades they are producing
throughout the year. I will bring global awareness into my classroom by featuring a new
country every month finding out facts and information about it that is not known. My
relationship with the community, parents, colleagues, and administration will be active and
positive since I cannot do this teaching thing alone and I will need their support and help.
