Name: Sandra Flores

Grade Level: 4th grade

Subject Area: Partial-products algorithm
Multiplication Wrestling
Objective:
Students will use Partial-products algorithm
Students will practice with extended multiplication facts
Students will introduce the basic principles of multiplication with multidigit numbers.
Materials:
1 Multiplication Wrestling Worksheet for each player (Math Masters, P. 488)
Number cards 0-9 (4 of each) or 1 ten-sided die
Alignment with State Standards
1.2.K5f. Knowledge Base Indicator: The student uses the concepts of these properties
with the whole number system and demonstrates their meaning including the use of
concrete objects: distributive property.
1.2.K2. Knowledge Base Indicator: The student identifies, models, reads, and writes
numbers using expanded form from tenths place through ten thousands place.
1.2.K6a. Knowledge Base Indicator: The student uses the concepts of these properties
with whole numbers from 0 through 100 and demonstrates their meaning including the
use of concrete objects: commutative properties of addition and multiplication

Background Information:
There should be 2, or two teams of 2 (group students in partners)
Students must get the larger product of two 2-digit numbers.
Engagement:
Tell Students that in this lesson they will learn to play a game that provides computation
practice.
Explain to students what is the purpose of Multiplication Wrestling.
Using the elmo, demonstrate that the object of the game is to get the larger product of two
2-digit numbers and show example.
Exploration:
1. Shuffle the deck of cards and place it number-side down on the table.
2. Each player draws 4 cards and forms two 2-digit numbers. Players should form their 2
numbers so that their product is as large as possible.
3. Players create 2 wrestling teams by writing each of their numbers as a sum of 10s and
1s.

4. Each players 2-team wrestle. Each member of the first team (for example, 70 and 5) is
multiplied by each member of the second team (for example, 80 and 4). Then the 4
products are added.
5. Scoring: The player with the larger products wins the round and receives 1 point.
6. To begin a new round, each player draws 4 new cards to form 2 new numbers. A game
consists of 3 rounds.

Application:
Encourage students to write their partial products so that the digits in each number are
aligned according to their value.
Math Boxes 5.2 on Math Journal 1, P. 110 Students practice and maintain skills through
Math Box problems.
Study Link 5.2 Math Masters, P. 140 Students practice and maintain skills through
Study Link activities.
Closure:
Once students have played multiplication wrestling they will be asked to give some
examples of the largest number they got in the game. Give time for responses.
Let students know that when you play Multiplication Wrestling or Multiply with the
partial-products method, you use the distributive property.

Evaluation:
In what ways, other than with number cards, can you help students learn partial-products
algorithm?
What experiences, knowledge, and vocabulary should students have in order to develop an
understanding of algorithms?
Differentiation:
Have partners spread around the group.
Work with students who need further help and or are having trouble with understanding
the game.
Act out and actual wrestling tag team and explain the rules that way for better
understanding of the multiplication wrestling.
