Math Activity Format

Name: Dena Sommers
Concepts Covered

1. Number and Number Sense

Targeted Age Group

3-5

Standards: Milestones of Early Learning, VA Foundation Blocks, or VA Standards of Learning

(SOLs)
b) Count a group (set/collection) of five to ten objects by touching each object as it is counted
and saying the correct number (one-to-one correspondence).

Learning Objective(s): (What do you want children to understand/be able to do after completing this
lesson?)
After this lesson the students should be able to:
1. Count each crayon aloud as they are removed from the container - Count to one to one
correspondence
Resources/Materials Needed: (What resources will the teachers and the children use?)
You must include at least one manipulative in this activity.
Crayons
Plastic pumpkin cup
Music - upbeat Halloween
Circle Rug to accommodate classroom students
Strategies: (How will the teacher engage the children? What activities will the children complete?
Indicate the teacher questions/prompts, expected child action, and the closing portion. Indicate at which
point the students are teacher-directed and at which point they are child-directed.)
The teacher will engage the child by sitting in a circle with classmates and play music. The music
will play then when the music stops the child holding the pumpkin cup has to pull the crayons out
of the container and count aloud the number of crayons in the cup. If a child can't count the
teacher will prompt the child (what comes after the number if a child is stuck). Teacher may
model counting of the crayons then have the student repeat it. After the child counts the crayons
the teacher will add or remove crayons to create a new number for the next child. The children
will know the game is ending when the teacher announces "this is the last time we will be passing
the pumpkin cup around."
Adaptation for Learner Diversity: (How can this lesson be adapted or structured for children with
special needs or different age groups?)
Do a smaller number of crayons in the pumpkin cup for developmentally delayed child. Prompt
them to count with the teacher repeating as the teacher says the number.
Assessment: (How will you determine the extent to which the children grasped the concept? What
evidence will you collect to indicate that the objectives were met?)
The children grasp the concept if they count the number of crayons correctly. Also a check list of
number of crayons each child could count to. Ex. Nicholas counted 16 crayons, Catherine counted
5.
Analysis/Reflection: (How well did this lesson work? Would you change anything next time? What did
you learn from this activity)
The lesson worked well. The children loved it. It was a successful way for children to learn
counting. The children helped each other count. Adapt this next time to apply this to children
learning colors. This could also be used to teach children to add for example if the teacher put in
the cup 2 blue crayons and 1 red how many crayons are there total?

Alternate Analysis
NOTE: Please indicate if you were not able to conduct this activity with a child.
In that case you must explain why you chose the activity and why you believe it is appropriate for
the age child you selected. You must indicate developmental knowledge about the intended age
group you intend this
