Research Findings on
Substance Abuse
Clients with substance use disorders
are at greater risk of developing chronic
health conditions such as cirrhosis of
the liver and AIDS; cardiovascular
disease, hypertension, cerebrovascular
accidents, diabetes, and depression
(National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism [NIAAA], 2001).

Substance
Abuse

The incidence of alcohol and illicit

drug use in elderly populations is
expected to double from 2.5 to 5 million
over the next 20 years with the aging
baby boomer population
(Gfroerer, Penne, Pemberton, &
Folsom, 2002).
Researchers have found higher rates of
alcohol use and abuse in individuals
with Spinal Cord Injuries pre-injury than
the general public. Kolakowsky-Hayner
(1999) reported that as many as 1762% of individuals with a spinal cord
injury were intoxicated at the time of
their injuries and 42% of individuals with
a Traumatic Brain Injury had consumed
alcohol at the time of their injuries.
Research shows that treatment for a
substance use disorder is more
effective when an individuals symptoms
are less severe and present for
a shorter period of time (Prochaska,
Norcross, & DiClemente, 1994).

Occupational therapy practitioners

are well trained to help clients look
critically at everyday routines and
examine how they affect their
state of health and their ability to
carry out what is important to
them. Occupational therapy can
help people recognize how their
substance use affects those roles
that are most meaningful; it helps
people explore and make those
links, and move toward the
occupational roles and patterns
they want to achieve.
Occupational therapy practitioners
examine the habits and behaviors
of clients that occur each day,
throughout the week. They show
clients how their behaviors and
thoughts revolve around drugs or
alcohol and how they lose their
identity as they lose the roles most
meaningful to them. Practitioners
then construct or rebuild those
occupational roles by determining
what activities bring clients the
most joy and sense of well-being
without drugs or alcohol.
Occupational therapy goes
beyond helping clients to stop
drug use; it prepares clients to fill
whatever void the substance
leaves behind with productive
occupation.
