STANDARDS/OUTCOMES

Learning Standard F.2. Model the solar system and planet positions.
OBJECTIVES Through these learning activities, the student will be able to:

Students will be able to each create a model of one of the planets using paper mache.
Students will show all information they have learned by taking a multiple choice test.
INSTRUCTION
Introduction/Instructional activities/Conclusion

The first day each student will be shown how to use paper mache. They will be given a balloon
planet that they must cover in the paper mache two layers. Each balloon will be placed in a cup that
the students can use to balance their work. Students will be given these directions:
1. First take a strip of paper.
2. Dip it into the mixture.
3. Slide hands over both side to remove excess mixture.
4. Place onto balloon.
5. Smooth down until there are no bubbles.
On the second day they will be given the same directions #1-5 as well as:
6. Place two more layers onto balloon
7. Use smaller strips to make sure entire balloon is covered.
On the third day they will be given their planets and they must paint them. They will have a
different set of directions for this day.
1. Look in Science book to get a picture in your mind of what colors you should paint your
planet.
2. Paint your planet with two coats of paint.
3. Place your planet back into your cup to let it dry.
After planets have had a day to dry the students will be given them back. Then we will hold them
up and have a scale model of what the planets look like in the solar system. This will give them a
better visual aid to understanding how the solar system is set up.
Once this complete they will take the Chapter 7 test.

Pre-assessment

Each student will talk about the solar system and their planets.
Checking up

Students will be informally assessed throughout the lesson to see their understanding of the steps
and their ability to follow them correctly.
Post-assessment

The final assessment will be the Chapter 7 test.

How this lesson provides DIFFERENTIATION for the students in this class

For the students who are unable to follow directions during this lesson they will have a separate
write-up they will need to do and present about one planet.
RESOURCES NEEDED

Glue, paper, water, straws, cups, bowls, trays, balloons, paint, paintbrushes
REFLECTIVE ASSESSMENT of lesson and student success (To be written on back after lesson is taught)

This lesson was quite fun to do with the students. I do not think that this type of activity had been
done this year so far, so it was exciting for them. I had a few students who were whining about the
feeling of the mixture but for the most part they were very good. If there were changes I could have
made I would have had a higher table and more space. It was very crowded putting all students
around small back table.
